I haven't heard a peep about this new k-cup variety yet on the forums or elsewhere. The description reminds me of Tree Hugger. Stay tuned! _________________ Grindmaster OPOD, Keurig B40, Nespresso D90, Clever Coffee Dripper + Hario Skerton mill

Here's an overexposed pic of the k-cup itself. The top is pale yellow with dark brown trim, and the cup is black. Note the Rainforest Alliance certification (marked "30% Certified"):
Notes: Scale confirms what taste buds suggest: At 15 grams pre-brew, probably an extra bold. Wet aroma robust with bittersweet chocolate notes. Comes across very dark but without smoke or char. Smooth. Thick-bodied. Toasty grass/grain in the background. Berry notes pop as it cools. Takes cream really well.
You could think of Obsidian as Tree Hugger's darker brother. Something about this k-cup also reminds me of GM's Double Black Diamond, but it's been a while since I've tasted the latter. _________________ Grindmaster OPOD, Keurig B40, Nespresso D90, Clever Coffee Dripper + Hario Skerton mill

p.s. I take it from the lack of response to this thread so far that the vendors don't know more about this new k-cup variety than I do? Interesting. Even the k-cup section on Caribou's site is mum about Obsidian for whatever reason. _________________ Grindmaster OPOD, Keurig B40, Nespresso D90, Clever Coffee Dripper + Hario Skerton mill

Right now it's only available in an 18 count and not a 24 count. Even Keurig doesn't have it listed on their site.. _________________ Single Cup Coffee Superstore! Over 500+ Coffee Pods, Keurig, Tassimo, Dolce Gusto. and More!! www.coffeewiz.com

A few members over at the K-cup Exchange (Yahoo group) say they've found these at Targets in Pittsburgh, PA, Austin, TX, and Raleigh, NC. I bought mine in Towson, MD (just N. of Baltimore), for the record. One person thought Obsidian was "super strong" while another liked it more, calling it "very dark but not too bitter" and suggesting a larger brew size for it. _________________ Grindmaster OPOD, Keurig B40, Nespresso D90, Clever Coffee Dripper + Hario Skerton mill

Add Anaheim, CA, to the list. For those of you who've been around ssc longer than I have, am I right to feel there's something unusual about a k-cup only being made available in 18-ct. boxes in retail stores like Target and not in 24-ct. boxes online? Not sure if this has happened before. _________________ Grindmaster OPOD, Keurig B40, Nespresso D90, Clever Coffee Dripper + Hario Skerton mill

Bought mine in Green Bay, WI.
Nice. Like them?
We can also put little pins on the map in Atlanta, GA, Orlando & Port Charlotte, FL, and Southern IN, according to Yahoo. Looks like these are pretty much everywhere now. _________________ Grindmaster OPOD, Keurig B40, Nespresso D90, Clever Coffee Dripper + Hario Skerton mill

Add a pin for Salem, NH, my nephew found it and gave me a couple of cups. If I were scoring cups, this would be a wow, strong smoky taste with a good chocolate taste, just a nice coffee. I do feel that Emeril Dark, Eclipse, and Double Black Diamond are stronger and this coffee comes close to my perfect k cup which is Black Gold. If you have a chance, pick up obsidian. As an after thought, the obsidian is a real nice coffee to have after dark with a good strong maduro cigar if we have any cigar fans on the board.

That nephew's a keeper. About Obsidian, I'm not surprised you like it! I think Black Gold makes a better iced coffee though (have tried both over ice recently). _________________ Grindmaster OPOD, Keurig B40, Nespresso D90, Clever Coffee Dripper + Hario Skerton mill

Josh, you might have me as a neighbor at some point. My godfather left me his house in Bowie and my wife and I want to move down there if we can sell our house here in Mass. We will still keep our places in VT and NH since they make us money during ski season and I use them during deer season. I got to love the Baltimore area when I attended Squid Prep in Annapolis, class of 1971. I was home based in Norfolk as a Marine for my career but we both enjoyed the Baltimore area. If we make the move down, you and any other of my friends in the area must come by for a cook out.

Gladly! Thanks. Keep me posted please. It's nicer here than I expected when we first moved from Chicago. We plan to stay put until next summer. After that, who knows? _________________ Grindmaster OPOD, Keurig B40, Nespresso D90, Clever Coffee Dripper + Hario Skerton mill
