Eric's Coffee Pod Reviews

Postby EricBNC » Sat Jan 09, 2010 10:33 am

I, like most members of this forum, enjoy pod brewed coffee. Since reviews helped me so much when I was new to the format I decided to post my own reviews as well. I use the BUNN My Cafe and the Grindmaster OPOD as my primary test units, but experience reveals Senseo, Krups HomeCafe, and Melitta 1:1 pod brewers will brew a decent cup from the pods listed too. I brew the pods using the tea (pulse brew) setting for maximum extraction with the BUNN and OPOD. Drop sizes can vary (if I have more than one sample) and the size is noted in the post, but I find most taste best at 7 - 8 fl oz.

The link below shows the template that forms the basis of my rating scale - The score is converted from a fraction to a decimal, divided by 2, and added to 50 (if no flaws pop up - less than 50 if I detect a taint) to arrive at the final score:

Coffee Cupping Chart & COE Cupping Criteria

Example: 24 points out of 30 = 80/2 = 40 + 50 = 90

Scoring Summary:
(90-99) Very Awesome Coffee
(85-89) Very Good Coffee
(78-84) Just Average Coffee
(50-77) Just Poor Coffee

In-Depth Tasting Notes (in alphabetical order):

Baronet Coffee Roasters
Baronet Blast Mega Pod 88 Baronet describes this as blend of light and dark roasted coffees. This pod has a rich aroma dry and brewed. On the first sip I get a mild tingle along with a more pronounced bittersweet richness. The mouth feel is not thin or thick at first, but a thickness and surprisingly more tingle develops as it cools. There is not a hint of bitterness - just a smooth balanced flavor that finishes with a chocolate aftertaste. I tried this 12g pod at a 9oz drop and would highly recommend this pod.

Baronet Colombian 100% 83 Baronet describes their pod as only the finest Colombian coffee, full bodied and smooth". The dry pod smells rich, and while brewing aroma is pleasing. The first sip presents a definite acidity and tingling that is followed with a nutty aftertaste. The mouth feel is more thick than thin. This cup is balanced well, and remains smooth as it cools. The 7.5g pod holds up fine at the 6oz drop and I would recommend this coffee.

Baronet Egg Nog Medium Roast 86 The roaster describes this pod as their New England style is rich and creamy, with cinnamon, spices, a dash of nutmeg and just enough rum flavor to satisfy eggnog lovers everywhere. The dry pod smells like egg nog and the brewed aroma is egg nog. The Green Mountain Spicy Egg Nog K-cup has, in my opinion, a sweeter aroma... The first slurp presents a medium acidity and a smoky, rum like flavor along with egg nog spiced with nutmeg and cinnamon. The mouth feel is medium and creamy. As it cools it remains the same as the first slurp. You definitely taste the coffee with this pod as the flavor enhances the experience without being overwhelming. This 7.8g pod brewed at the 6oz drop is unique and worth a try if the Spicy Egg Nog from Green Mountain is sweeter than you care for.

Baronet Limited Edition Estate Costa Rican 54 Baronet says the Florfina Tarrazú is an exceptional Costa Rican coffee from a small mill, Montañas del Diamante. This coffee has light body with hints of chocolate, framed by bright citrus and berry tones in the acidity. The dry pod smells fresh and nutty while the brewed aroma is nutty, spicy and floral. The first sip presents a bright, citrusy sweet taste with just a hint of nut in the finish. The mouth feel is medium full and creamy. As it cools it sweetens slightly and the brightness diminishes, but over all it stays balanced. This 10g pod brewed at the 7oz drop is recommended and well worth trying.

Baronet Fair Trade Organic French Roast 85 Baronet says this blend of specialty Fair Trade Organic coffees is dark roasted to develop deep smoky flavor with a rich finish. This coffee has a rich, dark roast smell while brewing. The body is good at 6oz with this pod. The medium acidity is present but the darker, sweeter flavor notes dominate. The cup remains smooth as it cools without becoming bitter, and maintains its flavor characteristics till the end. This 7.5g pod (This same Baronet flavor is packaged in a larger size) brews best at the 6oz setting and I would recommend this pod if darker roasts are your preference.

Baronet Fair Trade Organic Small Village Blend 12g Mega Pod 85 This pod has a decent dry smell but mild brewed aroma. On the initial sip it tastes tingly and bright with rich roasted flavor. The mouth feel is good too with a nice thick body. As it cools a slight bitterness develops but overall this is a complex full flavored cup. This 12g pod holds up at the 7oz (and probably 8 or 9oz) setting and I would recommend this pod.

Baronet Fair Trade Organic Small Village Blend 80 Bright acidity with medium body, smells nice in the pod but the aroma is not as strong during brewing. After cooling a bit, the acidity tapers off slightly allowing a hint of richness to develop. This 7.75g pod brews nice at the 7oz and 6oz setting and I would recommend this pod unless dark roasts are your preference.

Baronet Izzy’s Blend 85 The roaster describes this pod as the Goldsmith family secret - a unique blend that is full bodied with a sweet and floral bouquet. The dry pod smells nutty while the brewed aroma is earthy and slightly sweet. The first sip is pleasant with medium acidity balanced with that earthy middle and finish. The mouth feel is medium and smooth. As it cools the taste stays in balance. This one is not so adventurous that you would hesitate to serve it to certain guests, but not so boring you should be ashamed to serve it either – it’s just a regular, good tasting coffee . This 10g pod brewed at the 7oz drop makes a fine everyday consistent, good tasting cup – however, when you are in the mood for more exotic and adventurous tastes you should keep searching.

Baronet Kenya Dark AA 86 Baronet describes this pod as a dark roasted Kenya with a clean bright flavor and solid body. The dry pod smells rich and dark roasted and the brewed aroma is similar but not as pronounced. The first sip presents a lively tingle that spreads out evenly on my tongue. The mouth feel medium to full. As it cools the dark bittersweet tang steps up a notch. The cup is free from bitterness, is well balanced and has decent body, so what’s not to love? This 10g pod brewed at the 6oz drop makes for a good any day, everyday, all day long coffee.

Baronet 100% Kona Extra Fancy Medium Roast Baronet 90 Baronet describes this coffee as a smooth, even and mellow tasting coffee. The pod has a pungent coffee smell (due to the medium roast) that transfers to a rich aroma in the cup. The mouth feel is good too with a nice thick body. My mouth tingles on the initial sip and the coffee leaves a sweet aftertaste – pretty good so far. The cup remains smooth as it cools without becoming bitter, and the balanced flavor remains till the end. The 10g pod holds up at the 8oz setting and I would recommend this pod.

Baronet Moka Java Mega Pod 85 The roaster describes this pod as a blend of Central and South American coffees, medium roasted together for the richest coffee possible with a hint of smokey flavor. The dry pod smells fresh and the brewed aroma is chocolaty. The first sip presents a medium tingle mixed with an earthy, almost neutral, taste. The mouth feel is medium and silky. As it cools the cup remains balanced with just mild snap and tingle. This is a clean, balanced cup with no bitterness or edge and reminds me of a lot of breakfast blends. Considering the origins in the description, This Baronet coffee is technically not a Moka Java, but is a mix of similar light and heavy coffee as are most blends. This 12g mega pod brewed at the 8oz drop makes for a good first cup of the day, and mega pods are great for filling a travel (this is not a paper) cup.

Baronet Sumatra Dark Roast Mega Pod 86 Baronet describes this pod as "One of Indonesia’s finest treasures, this dark roasted coffee is considered the most full-bodied coffee in the world with earthy body, low acidity and hearty character". The dry pod smells great and the dark roasted aroma transfers nicely to the hot brewed cup. On the first sip a really rich, dark, complex taste jumps out. This tastes good. Full bodied is an understatement for this coffee – the mouth feel is excellent. This coffee is bold without being bitter. As this cup cools, a more pronounced bittersweet (think dark chocolate, but not as sugary sweet as chocolate) aftertaste develops. This 12g pod more than holds its own at the 8oz drop. I will be experimenting with 9 or 10oz drops with my next cup. I recommend this coffee for fans of bold, dark roasted coffee.

Baronet Tanzanian Peaberry 88 The roaster describes this medium roast pod as having fine acidity, intense flavor and full body. The dry pod smells nutty and spicy while the brewed aroma is caramel and raisin sweet. The first sip is medium bright while presenting a mild sharp, spicy tingle along with a mild bittersweet dark cocoa finish. The mouth feel is medium and creamy. As it cools the dry acidic brightness strengthens, the spiciness fades, and the finish sweetens a bit more. This pod is unusual compared to my other Tanzania Peaberry samples. Usually I get a sharp, dry wine taste right up front but here that dry grape taste profile is present but allows the bittersweet dark cocoa finish share prominence on the palate. This 10g pod brewed at the 7oz drop is well worth trying.

Black Mountain Gold
Black Mountain Gold Hawaiian Kona 92 The roaster describes this pod as a masterful blend that combines exotic and rare beans from the island of Kona with smooth and sweet Colombian Supremo Beans. The dry pod smells nutty and the brewed aroma is mild with hints of chocolate. The first sip is medium bright with a very rich bittersweet chocolate finish. The mouth feel is medium and velvety. As it cools the bittersweet cocoa taste is dominant. This pod is an excellent blend if you like chocolaty Colombian coffee. This 9.5g pod brewed at the 7oz drop is highly recommended.

Black Mountain Gold Kenya AA 87 BMG Kenya AA coffee pods are grown in the rich fertile soils of the Mount Kenya Region known for beans that produce superior balance and body with fuller more intense flavors. The dry pod smells nutty and spicy while the brewed aroma is floral and citrusy with a hint of sweet berries. The first sip presents a spiciness to balance the initial tingle. The mouth feel is medium full an syrupy. As it cools the spiciness gives way to a brighter finish. I like this coffee. It is smooth, tasty, and balanced, but not as bright or citrusy as I have come to expect from this region. This 9g pod brewed at the 7oz drop is worth a try if overly bright coffee is not to your liking.

Black Mountain Gold Moka Java 86 The roaster says this medium roast pod uses full-bodied, spicy peaberry coffee from the island of Java and blends it with lively Ethiopian Moka beans for a perfectly balanced cup with a clean finish. The dry pod smells nutty and the brewed aroma is caramel sweet. The first sip presents a sharp tingle and sweet, earthy, spicy finish. The mouth feel is medium light and smooth. As it cools the tingle gives way enough for the sweetness to build on the finish. This is a good cup from start to finish with enough complexity to stay interesting, but no bitterness to be offensive. This 9g pod brewed at the 7oz drop represents the style correctly and has a nice taste in the cup where it counts.

Caféjo
Caféjo Adrenaline Explosion 87 The roaster describes this pod as an eye-opening and full flavored, yet smooth dark roast that will start your day with a bang! The dry pod smells like walnuts and the brewed aroma is caramel and cinnamon spice. The first sip is dark roast, some char, and mild acidity – make no mistake - this is dark roasted coffee. The mouth feel is medium thick and smooth. As it cools some sweetness joins the char taste. I hesitate to use the word char - I think of no other descriptor – but this is not the same char taste associated with Starbucks. It has a more subtle affect on the flavor – it is noticeable but in a more balanced, non bitter enhancement to the other flavor. This 9g pod brewed at the 7oz drop is another smooth operator from Caféjo that should please dark roast lovers.

Caféjo Kenya Dark 85 The roaster describes this pod as lively and complex Kenya Coffee with a bittersweet richness, fruity overtones and a hint of citrus and blackberry. The dry pod smells like roasted nuts while the brewed aroma is mild and sweet. The first sip presents mild acidity and a dark cocoa finish. The mouth feel is medium and creamy. As it cools the bittersweet richness the roaster mentions takes over the finish. This Caféjo pod reminds me of a smoother version of the Parks & Co "Kenya In Ya" pod. This 9g pod brewed at the 7oz drop is worth trying.

Café Halo
Note: These reviews have been moved to my discontinued section found in post #5 of this thread 6/2010. If you read this in 2011 or later, beware any pods you find will have too much age, in my opinion, to be worth buying.

Café Rene
Café Rene Indonesia Arabica 87 The roaster describes this pod as the highest quality Arabica coffee coming from Inonezji and more from the island Java. 100% Arabica - Mild in flavor. The dry pod smells pungent and earthy while the brewed aroma is leathery and caramelized sugar sweet. The first sip presents a pleasant but mild acidity providing appropriate balance for the earthy, leathery tone that develops in the midway and lingers through the medium length finish. The mouth feel is medium to rich with a nice creamy texture. As it cools the earthy, leathery taste strengthens and is joined by a light (by comparison) bittersweet note. This pod tastes decent and is appropriate for the style as well with subdued acidity, nice body and nose, and does not turn bitter as it cools. This 7g pod brewed at a 5oz drop earns my recommendation.

Café Rene Malawi 85 The roaster describes this pod as highest quality Arabica derived from Malawi (Africa East). The dry pod smells nutty while the brewed aroma is mild with hints of brown sugar. The first sip is medium bright with hints of brown sugar in the medium to short finish. The mouth feel is medium light and velvety. As it cools the flavor thins a bit but does not turn bitter. This is not a complex cup but rather a simple, clean coffee with the sweet brown sugar note found in the aroma leading the charge through to the end. This 7g pod brewed at a 6oz drop tastes good, but a 5 or 4 fl oz drop might suit this pod better.

Café Rene Mild 85 The roaster describes this pod as being gently roasted Arabica highest quality - with a small addition of high quality Robusta, the aim of which is to balance kwaskowości coffee. The dry pod smells spicy while the brewed aroma is mild and sweet. The first sip is bright but gains some bite in the finish – this is either the Robusta or the kwaskowości – I am not quite sure which. The mouth feel is medium light with a decent medium length finish. As it cools the balance of bright and bite fight for attention on the palate with neither gaining the advantage. This one is quite robust for a mild coffee, so some deduction is deserved, but I cannot bring myself to impose the penalty as the flavors work too well in spite of the imposturous nomenclature. This 7g pod brewed at a 6oz drop is good kwaskowości coffee – enjoy!

The Coffee Artisan
Coffee Artisan Dark Side 85 The Coffee Artisan says to expect a smooth, heavy body with sharp acidity and a slightly smokey finish. The aroma is moderately flavorful like most good dark roasts - not offensive but not outstanding either. I get the smoke taste and a hint of leather along with mild, but not sharp acidity. The mouth feel is right for the style – it is rich without being cloying so the brightness certainly is present but is not dominant. A classic dark roast taste develops without bitterness as the cup cools. This 10g pod held up well at an 8oz drop. I would recommend buying a box of this if you like dark roast coffee.

The Coffee Artisan Ethiopian Harrar 91 The roaster describes this pod as a well balanced cup with aromas of berries and spice, sparkling strawberry acidity, notes of brown sugar and an earthy finish. The dry pod smells like berries and spice while the brewed aroma is brown sugar sweet. The first sip tastes brown sugar and berry sweet with medium acidity and a rich body. The mouth feel is medium and velvety. As it cools the berry notes start to pop with a bit more intensity and the acidity seems to ramp up too. I’ve been fortunate enough to sample some decent Ethiopian coffee lately, and this pod can hold it’s own. This 10g pod brewed at the 7oz drop is highly recommended.

The Coffee Artisan Indian Mysore 86 The Coffee Artisan says it is exceptionally well balanced with moderate acidity, full body and a fruity-nutty flavor. The dry pod smells nutty and the brewed aroma is nut-like as well. The first sip reveals mild snap and sweetness – this isn’t a coffee for the X-Bold “mud in the cup” crowd. The mouth feel is medium and the 7oz or 8oz drop is a good size for this pod. As it cools the nuttiness and sweetness becomes more pronounced. There is no bitter aftertaste here, just a smooth, refined cup of coffee. This 10g pod brewed at the 8oz drop is mild and well balanced but at 7oz it loses some of its refinement. Serve it to your friends and only after they remark how smooth it is, (they will) tell them about its exotic origin.

The Coffee Artisan 100% Jamaican Blue Mountain 85 The Coffee Artisan says this coffee is slow roasted to a Light or City Roast to bring out the best possible flavor. The aroma in the cup is pleasant. I get a pronounced tang that tapers into a slight bitterness in on the first sip. As it cools, a mild chocolate richness develops. The mouth feel is not noticeably thin or thick. The cup is balanced well. This 10g pod held up well at an 8oz drop. I would recommend buying a box, but do not expect the extra cost for this pod to open the door to a magical world of flavor.

The Coffee Artisan 100% Kona Extra Fancy 86 The Coffee Artisan uses only the finest Kona Extra Fancy Beans, and slow roasts them to a Light or City Roast to bring out the best aroma and flavor. This pod smells good (the inside of the empty wrapper smells like a payday candy bar with a caramel and nutty aroma) but the brewed cup produces a subdued aroma. A medium tingling sensation develops on the first sip and the mouth feel is neither thin nor thick at the 8oz drop. A bittersweet taste (not to be confused with a bitter aftertaste) develops as the cup cools. This is a decent, smooth, well balanced cup at the 8oz drop and I recommend this coffee.

The Coffee Artisan Panama Boquete 91 The Coffee Artisan says this has a sweet fruit taste up front with an earthy undertone. This coffee is low in acidity but full-bodied with a mellow chocolate aftertaste and aroma. The dry pod smells spicy and the brewed aroma is light and sweet like raisins, fruit and chocolate. The first sip is bright and apricot fruity. The mouth feel is medium light and delicate. As it cools the light and bright flavor hangs tough. If someone gave me this pod in a blind tasting, I would guess incorrectly that it is an East African. This 10g pod brewed at the 7oz drop is very good.

The Coffee Artisan Papua New Guinea 90 The Coffee Artisan says to expect a full body and a sweet fruity acidity that develops as this coffee cools. I disagree. The lively mouth feel from the sweet fruity acidity is evident from the first sip. The aroma is average for a light roast - not offensive but not outstanding either. As it cools more pronounced undercurrents of sweetness mingle with the brightness but this coffee maintains its balance till the end. This 10g pod held up well at an 8oz drop. I would seriously recommend buying a box of these.

The Coffee Artisan Puerto Rican 88 The Coffee Artisan says the Puerto Rican Yauco is a very limited production crop from the small mountainous growing regions on the island. It is softly bittersweet with a buttery-creamy body and soft low-acid flavor profile. The dry pod smells really fresh and aromatic, and the brewed aroma is medium to mild. The first sip very mild but not flat – I taste acidity and sweet toasted notes balanced to perfection. The mouth feel is medium and silky even though the color is quite dark. As it cools it remains balanced without bitterness – this is very refined . This 10g pod brewed at the 7oz drop is well worth trying.

The Coffee Artisan Rwanda Ingoboka 85 The Coffee Artisan says this has a snappy mandarin acidity that is balanced by a full sweetness and medium to full body with a pleasant lingering aftertaste. The dry pod smells pungent but the brewed aroma is mild. The first sip presents a mild, lemon like acidity. The mouth feel runs thin at 8oz and medium at 6oz. As it cools the wine like taste is more pronounced, but still not overpowering . Unlike most African light to medium roasts that share a similar fruity zest, this one is tamed by a mild earthiness so the balance is very nice. This 10g pod brewed at the 6oz drop took a couple tries to grow on me but has, so I recommend giving this unique pod a try.

Community Coffee
Community Coffee Dark Roast 78 Community Coffee Dark Roast 57 The rich aroma of their original coffee blend will awaken your senses as you indulge in the full-bodied, yet smooth flavor. The dry pod smells good and the brewed aroma is not noticeable. The first sip tastes mild - without much acidity or sweetness. This pod does not have a dark roasted taste, but is balanced. Instead it resembles a medium roast in taste and mouth feel. In my opinion the mouth feel is medium to medium thin. As it cools some bitterness develops in the after taste. This 8-9g pod brewed at the 6oz and 7oz drop is better at 7oz, but still too bitter for my taste once it cools.

Cool Beans Pods
Cool Beans Breakfast Blend 83 The roaster describes this light roast pod as smooth, with a mild finish. The dry pod smells like caramel and the brewed aroma is mild caramel as well. The first sip is bright, citrusy, and spicy followed by a mild earthy finish. The mouth feel is medium and smooth. As it cools the sharp taste and the spicy taste mellow but remain the dominant taste. The finish is bright, but not bitter, with a mild caramel sweetness revealing itself as well. This 10g pod brewed at the 7oz drop is worth a try if you like light and lively breakfast blends.

Cool Beans City Roast 86 The roaster describes this medium roast pod as having full flavor with a smooth clean finish. The dry pod smells mild with a hint of spice and the brewed aroma offers mild floral and spice notes. The first sip presents strong earthiness and mild acidity. The mouth feel is thick and creamy. As it cools a spicy bittersweet taste layers on top of an earthy fullness in the finish. This is a decent tasting coffee for me with a mouth feel and finish that is similar to their House Blend pod, but it lacks that acidic tingle I personally enjoy in my cup. This 10g pod brewed at the 7oz drop tastes good and is worth trying if Sumatran style coffee suits your taste.

Cool Beans Colombian Supremo 85 The roaster describes this light roast pod as having rich aroma, mild acidity and full-bodied flavor. The dry pod smells like new leather and the brewed aroma is mildly floral. The first sip presents mild lemon acidity and balanced sweetness on the finish. The mouth feel is medium light and clean. As it cools, a spicy, earthy taste mingles with the lemon taste. Chocolate bomb lovers need to look elsewhere for that taste. This 10g pod brewed at the 7oz drop is decent, but reminds me more of a Costa Rican in style and flavor.

Cool Beans Ethiopian Yirgacheffe/Sidamo/Limu 77 The roaster invites us to “Rule the day from high atop this tower of taste”, but does not describe how this medium roast pod will taste. The dry pod smells black peppery while the brewed aroma is tart citrus. The first sip is initially medium bright with some tart and sweetness from the wet aroma coming through in the middle and lasting through the short finish. The mouth feel is light and silky. As it cools the finish sweetens even more while the initial brightness fades. This one, though very balanced, tasted a little thin at 7 fl oz (review score is based on a 6.5 fl oz drop) which I can correct for, but I also got a distinct paper pod filter aftertaste for which I have no solution – I tried rinsing the outside of 2nd pod with hot water before brewing it in my OPOD but I still get this taste. I then tested another manufacturer’s pod to see if it was me, but even this older (and close to stale) pod did not have this paper taste. This standard size pod, brewed at the 7 or 6.5 fl oz drop, is not making my top ten list.

Cool Beans French Roast 85 The roaster describes this dark roast pod as being their darkest roast, with a smooth smoky flavor. The dry pod smells mildly sweet while the brewed aroma is spicy and dark. The first sip presents some acidic tingle along with a dark and a bit charred finish. The mouth feel is thick and creamy. As it cools a bit of the char taste picks up in intensity and the cup seems to thicken. This is one dark mother of a cup with many similarities to Café Halo Ethical Addiction in the beginning and Coffee People’s French roast in the finish. This 10g pod brewed at the 7oz drop is worth trying (could have handled 8 or 9oz easily) if really dark and a bit charred French roasted coffee suits your taste.

Cool Beans House Blend 87 This is the roaster’s favorite everyday light roast cup. The dry pod smells reasonably fresh and the brewed aroma is faintly raisin like. The first sip is an earthy, semisweet, spicy flavor with medium to light acidity. The mouth feel is full and syrupy – this is a light roast? As it cools the spicy semisweet taste remains dominant. This pod packs a lot of punch for a light roast coffee. This 10g pod brewed at the 7oz drop is bold and full flavored and worth trying.

Cool Beans Midnight Blend 91 The roaster describes this medium roast pod as having Columbian and Central American beans in a zesty French Roast. The dry pod smells nutty while the brewed aroma is brown sugar and spice. The first sip presents nice acidity (but not citrusy) and tingle balanced by a dark bittersweet but not charred finish. The mouth feel is medium full and rich. As it cools the bittersweet finish strengthens but not enough to overwhelm the still present initial brightness. This is a really nice cup of coffee with it’s complexity of flavor. This 10g pod brewed at the 7oz drop is well worth recommending if dark but not charred coffee suits your taste.

Cool Beans San Francisco Blend 88 The roaster describes this dark roast pod as having aromatic French Roast with flavors of Kenya AA and Sumatra Mandheling. The dry pod smells sweet, pungent and nutty and the brewed aroma is mild and berry like. The first sip presents a mild tingle of acidity with a berry sweetness and rich bittersweet finish. The mouth feel is medium and smooth. As it cools the French roast darkness starts to pop. With this pod you get a sample of the berry sweetness found in Kenyan coffee, a dose of rich body from the Sumatran component, and French roast flavor to add that bittersweet finish - nice. This skillfully blended pod brewed at the 7oz drop makes a really good cup of coffee.

Cool Beans Sumatra Mandheling 70 The roaster describes this dark roast pod as being full bodied with intense earthy flavor. The dry pod smells a little spicy while the brewed aroma is spicy, thick with a little bit of sweetness. The first sip is mild and balanced. The mouth feel is medium and smooth. As it cools stays balanced throughout. This is a good, low acidity, medium bodied Sumatran pod that probably fits the profile and audience the roaster targeted. This 10g pod brewed at the 7oz drop is worth trying if Sumatran style coffee suits your taste.

Eldorado
Eldorado Kenya AA 90 The roaster describes this pod as such: “Considered the Fine Wine of Coffees, Our Kenya AA is sharp on the tongue and full bodied to the palate. Crafted in a full city roast, this coffee will leave a lasting impression on your staff and guests.” The dry pod smells spicy while the brewed aroma is mild with a chocolate note along with some berry. The first sip is tremendous berry sweetness along with a tang that lingers through the middle and joins some spiciness in the finish. The mouth feel is medium and velvety. As it cools the brightness tones down and the finish sweetens a bit. This pod makes as good a cup of Kenya coffee as anything I have tasted to date – very flavorful and bright. This 10g pod brewed at the 7 fl oz drop is right up my alley and is worth trying for sure if light and bright suits your taste.

Eldorado Organic Guatemala 87 The roaster describes this pod as Certified Organic, this coffee is from the finest plantation in Guatemala and will give the connoisseur a distinctive experience. Sweet, smoky and aromatic. The dry pod smells nutty and the brewed aroma is raisin sweet. The first sip is sharp, tingly, winey and floral. The mouth feel is full and creamy thick. As it cools the initial sharpness mutes a bit. This one reminds me of the Reunion Island Tanzania S.U.F. with the similar sharp winey taste, but was not nearly as dry and felt smoother and better balanced. This 10g pod brewed at the 7oz drop is nice if you like bright, acidic coffee too. Thanks starryeyes for the sample.

Eldorado Sumatra Mandheling 85 The roaster says this coffee is prized the world over for its richness and complexity, and the roast master takes special pride in crafting these beans from Indonesia into an intense yet smooth and flavorful cup of coffee. The dry pod smells a little sweet but not pungent while the brewed aroma is mild with a hint of spice and sweetness. The first sip presents very little acidity but does offer a deep, chewy bittersweet taste in the finish. The mouth feel is medium full and creamy. As it cools a tobacco like taste pops up in the cup, but does not overwhelm the other tastes. This one tastes like most good Sumatran coffee pods I have tried – low acidity, heavy body, and heavy flavor. This 10g pod brewed at the 7oz drop is good, but could easily handle 8oz drop with so heavy a body.

My Pod Reviews (Continued from first post)

In-Depth Tasting Notes Part II (in alphabetical order):
Please note that due to individual post size limits on the forum not all the information fits in one post.

If you are looking for information on a particular pod not found in this post, the in depth reviews are split over more than one post and begin in the first post of this thread.

Fratello Coffee Roasters
Fratello Bolivian Telmo Cahuana COE 83 Fratello describes this pod as Dark chocolate and smokey earth aromas with a lingering sparkling citrus acidity. A clean syrupy body shows hints of raisin. The dry pod smells chocolate like and the brewed aroma is similar. The first sip presents a medium acidity and what I guess is best described as dark earthiness mingling with mild sweetness (this best describes the aftertaste as well). The mouth feel is medium. As it cools a mild bittersweet taste develops, but is not bitter. Overall it’s a good cup but it seems a little muted in the sparkling acidity department for my taste. This 9.5g pod brewed at the 6oz drop is unique and worth trying.

Fratello Brazil Santos Sete Cachoieras 93 Fratello describes this pod as a clean sweet Brazilian coffee with mild acidity, and some nutty undertones. A clean cup. Full city. The dry pod smells chocolaty and the brewed aroma is rich and earthy. The first sip presents a dark, bittersweet, chocolaty taste. The mouth feel is very nice with a medium thickness at 6 & 7oz. As it cools it gets sweeter and more complex, and even richer, but never bitter. This pod makes a sweet, delicious cup of coffee. This 9.5g pod brewed at the 6 or 7oz drop tastes great and I heartily recommend this pod.

Fratello Brazilian Daterra Sweet Blue 2010 88 Fratello describes this pod as sweet chocolate and syrupy orange aromas complimenting a thick mouth feel and dark chocolate almond flavors, very balanced, and an acidity and sweetness reminiscent of a Kenyan. The dry pod smells like chocolate and nuts. The brewed aroma is rich roast nut and some caramel. The first sip presents very mild acidity along with a smooth sweet finish. The mouth feel medium light and silky. As it cools the flavor profile stays balanced and very similar to the initial taste. The cup is balanced like a 100% Kona. This 9.5g pod brewed at the 8oz drop is a must try if you like smooth, balanced coffee similar to a Kona.

Fratello Brazilian Daterra Sweet Blue 2009 85 Fratello describes this pod as sweet chocolate and syrupy orange aromas complimenting a thick mouth feel and dark chocolate almond flavors, very balanced, and an acidity and sweetness reminiscent of a Kenyan. The dry pod smells like chocolate and nuts. The brewed aroma is not as noticeable but still nice. The first sip is sweet and tangy. The mouth feel is best at 6oz. As it cools the flavor profile trends towards less brightness and more depth of richness. The cup is balanced and not bitter. This 9.5g pod is worth recommending at the 6oz drop.

Fratello Burundi Kinyovu 85 The roaster describes this pod as sweet spiced orange cocoa aromas with a thick complex flavors with undertones of birch and an apple skin acidity. The dry pod smells spicy and pungent like a darker roast pod while the brewed aroma is faint with a candy like sweetness I cannot place. The first sip is medium acidic and sweet in that hard to place candy like way again – no fruit or citrus though the short but sweet finish. The mouth feel is balanced, with a medium thick creamy texture. As it cools the balance and clean taste is what stands out to me. I only have one pod to sample so nailing the taste isn’t going to happen. The taste is good though. This 9.5g pod brewed at the 7 fl oz drop is one I would like to try again and certainly would serve it to guests when just a little extra is all the intended audience would appreciate – your buddies living for the bright fruit bowl east African coffee can be might not be as wowed by this one.

Fratello Christmas Morning 87 The roaster describes this pod as, I think, festive? The dry pod smells spicy like nutmeg while the brewed aroma is like one of those Yankee Candle Shop holiday selections – you smell pumpkin and maybe gingerbread too. The first sip is medium bright and moderately flavorful reminiscent of the brewed aroma but not overwhelming as is the case with artificial flavoring. The mouth feel is medium thin and silky. As it cools the spices turn pepper or ginger warm and mingle with the coffee flavor to give this cup a unique and long finish. This one surprised me – I expected a sweet caramel/vanilla type of holiday play but this pod is different and I am glad for that. This 9.5g pod brewed at the 7oz drop is tasty – I wish I had discovered pods back when this one was fresh.

Fratello Colombian Huila Pitalito 86 Fratello describes this pod as providing a notably clean cup with sweet orange and butter vanilla aromas. The flavor notes of maple and caramel linger along with a bright green apple acidity. The dry pod smells chocolaty and the brewed aroma is a sweet dark chocolate roasted smell. The first sip is medium bright with a pronounced sweet finish. The mouth feel is medium and smooth. As it cools it remains balanced with a bittersweet aftertaste. I could drink this coffee all day long and not grow tired of it. This 9.5g pod brewed at the 7oz drop makes a very good cup of Colombian coffee.

Fratello Colombian Huila Suaza 85 The roaster describes this pod as concentrated aromas of sugar cane with a cinnamon toast sweetness and a lingering delicate acidity. The dry pod smells spicy and nutty while the brewed aroma is mild dark chocolate and caramel. The first sip is medium bright presenting a hint of citrus with a bit of the wet aroma sweetness coming on in the middle and lasting through a bit of a short finish. The mouth feel is medium full and velvety smooth. As it cools the initial brightness develops a sweeter profile and no bitterness develops in the finish. I enjoyed the pod for it’s nuanced flavor – not over the top but not just a cup of coffee either – it has the taste aimed for by most breakfast blends. This 9.5g pod brewed at the 7 fl oz drop is a fine Colombian coffee.

Fratello Colombian Villarrica Cup of Excellence 95 Fratello describes this pod as having aromas of jasmine and dried apricot, complex citric acidity with a lingering clean finish and a red apple sweetness. The dry pod offers up cocoa and chocolate and the brewed aroma is floral and chocolaty sweet. On the first sip, there is incredible brightness followed by a sweet finish. The mouth feel is medium and creamy. As it cools, the tango of tastes between the citrus and bittersweet cocoa and chocolate play out till the end. This 9.5g pod brewed at 7oz is highly recommended both for its balance of complex flavors from the first sip to the last.

Fratello Costa Rican Calle de Copey COE 84 Fratello describes this as having aromas of oatmeal and raisins with silky flavors of sweet peach and honey and is creamy, well balanced and notably clean. The dry pod smells like a chocolate covered pretzel and the brewed aroma is sweet smelling and pleasant. The first sip presents medium spicy acidity balanced by a plum or raisin sweetness on the finish. The mouth feel is medium thin and delicate. As it cools, I taste some bitterness in the finish but the sweetness deepens too, which is nice. My only direct comparison available with similar quality is some Costa Rican whole bean COE that delivers a floral aroma, fruit and chocolate like taste, and has a much fuller body than this cup. This 9.5g pod brewed at the 7oz drop is going to be missed by many though when the last box is gone.

Fratello Costa Rican Cerro Alto 91 Fratello describes this pod as Organically Grown Fair Trade Coffee. Strictly high-grown coffee that produces a distinctive brew with vibrant flavor & rich undertones. The dry pod smells fresh while the brewed aroma is mild. The first sip is chocolaty sweet. The mouth feel is full and creamy. As it cools this cocoa richness builds and builds. I enjoy this flavor enough that I could drink this all day long. This 9.5g pod brewed at the 7oz drop makes an awesome cup of coffee.

Fratello Costa Rican Co-op Palmares 90 Fratello gave this coffee a cupping score of 87.5 The Costa Rican Co-op Palmares has sweet aromas of brown sugar and apple pie with a thick body of milk chocolate fudge and a clean silky finish. The dry pod smells fresh and pungent, similar to the Costa Rican Calle de Copey COE. The brewed aroma is sweet and dark. The first sip is medium bright with a sweet molasses finish. The mouth feel is medium and velvety. As it cools this one maintains a nice tingle and sweet finish till the end. This cup is extremely balanced, and in my opinion is preferable to the Costa Rican Calle de Copey COE, and I could drink it every day. This 9.5g pod brewed at the 7oz drop makes a fine cup of coffee and I am very happy this one is not on the TCA “endangered species” pod list.

Fratello Dixie Voodoo 91 The roaster describes this pod as a blend of Indonesian coffees roasted very dark. A full body with a smoky flavor, without the bitter aftertaste, just smooth and lingering. The dry pod smells very fresh and pungent while the brewed aroma is smoky and sweet. The first sip grabs you with a snappy tingle and rich dark chocolate along with a hint of smoke in the finish. The mouth feel is medium and smooth. As it cools the cup sweetens a bit, but for the most part stays balanced. I could drink this one every day and be content. This 9.5g pod brewed at the 7oz drop is well worth recommending.

Fratello Ethiopian Idido Misty Valley 95 Fratello describes their pod as aromas and long lingering flavors of tropical fruits, blueberry and strawberry compliment a syrupy body. Full of character, yet notably clean and bright throughout. The dry pod smells average but the brewed aroma is distinctly fruity. The first sip reveals a unique semi-tart, berry like (blueberry) sweetness. The mouth feel is medium full at 6 oz. As it cools it remains smooth, the tartness diminishes as berry-like sweetness increases (strawberry), but it never turns bitter. This cup’s taste sets a high standard for other Ethiopian coffee pods to meet. To say this 9.5g pod brewed at the 6 oz drop is recommended is an understatement.

Fratello French Saigon Dark 90 The roaster describes this dark roast pod as a sure fire hit for those who love the deep smoky taste of a dark roast but without any bitterness. The dry pod smells fresh and pungent while the brewed aroma is dark, smoky, and inviting. The first sip presents mild acidity and a dark roast bittersweet flavor with maybe some nuttiness in the finish. The mouth feel is medium and smooth. As it cools the bittersweet roast flavor mixes with a barely detectable char taste. This is a nice dark roast – not too dark, but dark enough to bring out what I look for in a French roast. This 9.5g pod brewed at the 7oz drop is roasted right on the money for this style and is well worth recommending.

Fratello Guatemalan Nueva Granada Estate 90 Fratello gives this a Cupping Score of 87.6 – Nutty & chocolate orange aromas prepare you for the dark chocolate and creamy/silky mouth feel with lingering and zesty orange acidity. The dry pod smells nutty and the brewed aroma is roasted nut with a hint of raisin. The first sip is tingly and spicy. The mouth feel is medium and silky smooth. As it cools a cocoa taste joins in for a pleasant finish. I enjoy the acidity in this one – it is sweet, but not citrusy sharp - the acidity does not overwhelm the cup. This 9.5g pod brewed at the 7oz drop is definitely worth recommending.

Fratello Gunsmoke Dark 86 The roaster says this dark blend of African coffees will give you a bold taste with a smooth smokey finish. The dry pod smells pungent, fresh, and smoky like roasted nuts and the brewed aroma pipe tobacco smoky. The first slurp is all about a sweet, raisin sweetness and tingle finishing with a hint of char joining the roasted nut finish. The mouth feel is medium and creamy. As it cools the smoky, char taste comes on strong but a mild acidic tingle remains. This still is a really nice dark roast blend that is bold and multidimensional in flavor. This 9.5g pod brewed at the 7oz drop is highly recommended.

Fratello Honduras Marcala 90 Fratello says the rich dark chocolate and slightly nutty aromas are followed through by a buttery and silky mouth feel. The dry pod smells chocolaty and spicy and the brewed aroma is cinnamon and raisins. The first sip presents a wonderful tingle along with a nutty sweetness. The mouth feel is medium and silky. As it cools, the flavor thins a bit but never turns bitter. I enjoy the taste and aroma of this cup a lot. This 9.5g pod brewed at the 7oz drop can hold its own head to head against almost any pod available save an elite few.

Fratello Kenya Dark 87 Fratello describes their pod as enhancing the liveliness of Kenya in this dark intoxicating brew. The dry pod smells pungent and the brewed aroma is one of rich dark roast coffee (seems obvious on the surface, but I find a lot of pods are not aromatic after brewing so to me a good smell is instantly noticeable). The first sip is quite bright and sweet at 6oz or 7oz. The mouth feel is medium at 6 or 7oz. As it cools it sweetens even more. Wow – this is a really nice coffee. It is full bodied, rich, flavorful and aromatic. This 9.5g pod brewed is good at 7oz, but at the 6oz drop it is wonderful – I have found my go to pod for Kenyan AA.

Fratello Kenya Wamuguma 91 The roaster describes this pod as having aromas of chocolate raisins with a syrupy mouth feel, mild pink grapefruit acidity and clean flavors of brown sugar/graham cracker. The dry pod smells sweet – almost honey like – while the brewed aroma is raisin sweet. The first sip presents a citrusy acidity – but not lemony, as it is sweeter while the finish is raisin sweet. The mouth feel is medium light and delicate. As it cools the sweetness deepens a bit (brown sugar/graham cracker?) to add a rich level of complexity framed by the still bright acidity – I do taste the grapefruit now. This Kenya roast has a unique, brighter, snappier taste compared to the darker, sweeter, berry-like Kenya Gran Cru I have been living off of since finding those beans at my local Whole Foods grocery. It reminds me more of the GMR Kenya AA K-Cup with it’s brightness, but it scores far ahead of that nice K-Cup in terms of depth and flavor complexity. This 9g pod brewed at the 7oz drop is well worth recommending.

Fratello Marachesh Blend 83 Fratello describes this pod as the joining of the exotic continent of Africa with the joyous personality of South America to create this velvety thick, rich tasting blend. The dry pod smells spicy and the brewed aroma is floral and light. The first sip is spicy and bright, but not fruity or citrusy. The mouth feel is medium light and smooth. As it cools it seems to thin out a bit but the brightness remains noticeable and enjoyable. Overall, this is a decent cup of coffee especially when you want a more delicate 2nd or 3rd cup of the day. This 9.5g pod brewed at the 7oz drop is worth trying if lighter roast coffee fits your style. Thank you starryeyes for the sample!

Fratello Mocca Java 86 Fratello describes their pod as a classic blend of Ethiopian "Mocca" and Sumatra "Java" beans. A complex cup of coffee with a full bodied flavor and earthy undertones. The dry pod smells rich and the brewed aroma is good too. The first sip produces a nice tingly feeling. The mouth feel is medium. As it cools it remains sharp, and I get a little dryness in the aftertaste. In the battle for flavors, the sharpness of the Ethiopian wins out, but is tamed somewhat by the Sumatran – This is what blending is all about and I like it. This 9.5g pod brewed at the 6oz drop earns my recommendation.

Fratello Nicaraguan Fina El Limoncello 91 Fratello describes this pod as orange, pine, black cherry, cloves, apple, with grapefruit acidity (description from jbviau’s review). The dry pod smells like cinnamon spice and the brewed aroma is sweet and mild. The first sip is lemony, spicy and chocolate raisin sweet. The mouth feel is medium and silky. As it cools this cocoa richness and cinnamon spice builds. This is a level or two more complex than the Mama Mina and Organic/FT Nicaraguan also from Fratello. This 9.5g pod brewed at the 7oz drop makes just an awesome cup of coffee. Thanks starryeyes for the sample!

Fratello Nicaraguan Los Milagros Cup of Excellence 88 Fratello won the 2007 Nicaragua Cup of Excellence® Program auction for this #15 lot (cupping score of 86.63). This cup is smooth and well balanced with refined acidity, cocoa, syrupy, caramel, rich, creamy, smooth tastes and a lingering chocolate finish along with a fruity aroma. The dry pod smells decent while the brewed aroma has a floral smell. The first sip presents a tangy acidity followed by a woody, earthy, spicy taste. The mouth feel is medium full and creamy smooth. As it cools the cocoa bittersweet finish strengthens. This 9.5g pod brewed at the 7oz drop is better the second time around and worth picking up if you can still find it.

Fratello Nicaragua Mama Mina 86 Fratello describes this pod as aromas of cinnamon, raisin and honey-pear, complimented by a creamy body and a pink grapefruit finish. Cupping score of 90.5. The dry pod smells pungent and chocolaty and the brewed aroma is mild and lightly floral but I am missing the cinnamon. The first sip is raisin and honey like in that it is sweet and moderately tingly. The mouth feel is full and creamy. As it cools, the sweetness builds while the tingle maintains its presence but a hint of astringency joins as well. I could drink this coffee any time though and be very happy. This 9.5g pod brewed at the 7oz drop makes a really great cup.

Nicaraguan Organic Fair Trade 84 Fratello describes this pod as Organically Grown Fair Trade full bodied coffee that is roasted to perfection-you will notice a hint of earthy undertones. The dry pod’s aroma is like cinnamon spice and the brewed aroma reminds me faintly of a box of raisins. The first sip is bright followed by a firm sweetness that does not quite match the brightness but is still present. The mouth feel is full and syrupy. As it cools this one sweetens a bit more and now you can taste why the initial brightness didn’t come off as overpowering, but a little bit of bitterness slips in as well. This cup changes enough through the whole process to keep me guessing what I am tasting. I am not sure what the technical tasting term for this enigma is, so I will call it complex. This 9.5g pod brewed at the 7oz is not an enigma when it comes to a recommendation – I say go for it! Thanks starryeyes for a great trade!

Fratello Panama Diamond Mountain Esmeralda 85 Fratello describes this pod as having aromas of nectarine and milk chocolate with a bright meyor lemon acidity the sweetness of a red apple, and a clean delicate body. This pod smells great dry but I do not get much nose when brewing. The mouth feel is medium. I get a mild tangy taste along with cocoa sweetness . As it cools, the cup reveals a bit more acidity and sweetness with no bitterness. It’s a good, smooth, very balanced cup with an interesting yet subtle complexity. Brewed at the 7oz drop, this pod earns a recommendation.

Fratello Snakebite Dark 83 Fratello describes the pod as two worlds colliding bringing North & South America together in this complex blend with full body and mild acidity. The dry pod smells mild and the brewed aroma is smoky like mesquite chips on a hot grill. The first sip is acidic and bright, maybe with a mild lemon citrus note on the finish. The mouth feel is medium thin and silky smooth. As it cools the initial brightness tempers and the cup ends with a slight bittersweet but balanced finish. This is a decent cup of coffee to start the day off with, more like a friendly garter snake than a mighty Amazonian anaconda. This 9.5g pod brewed at the 7oz drop is worth trying if you can still find it.

Fratello Tanzania Songea Peaberry 91 The roaster describes this pod as creamy black tea aromas complimenting sweet flavors of peaches and mangos with a creamy body and vibrant grape acidity. The dry pod smells spicy and nutty while the brewed aroma is delicate with some floral notes. The first sip is like tea initially but morphs into a melon middle and a clean citrus finish. The mouth feel is medium to light and silky as they come. As it cools the black tea taste blends with a more sweet yet winey finish. For all it’s complexity, this is a very balanced and clean cup, and one that reminds me of the Yemen Moka San’ani as both have a clean yet very complex taste. This 9.5g pod brewed at the 7 fl oz drop is unique and certainly worth trying.

Fratello Yemen Moka San’ani 91 Fratello says Yemen coffee is best described as having a rich, fresh and earthy flavor. What’s unique is that behind the earthy notes, there is a vibrant fruity flavor and sweet acidity. When prepared properly, the lingering blueberry finish will really surprise your taste buds. These blueberry notes are also found in its wonderful fragrance. The dry pod smells earthy and spicy while the brewed aroma is sweet like berries. The first slurp presents a melon or berry like sweetness with a spicy, earthy finish. The mouth feel is clean, delicate and medium light. As it cools the tingle remains while the sweetness fades slightly and the spiciness becomes more pronounced. This one is hard to peg because it is unlike the other Moka Java’s I tried. The spiciness and sweetness in one cup is quite unique. This 9.5g pod brewed at the 7 fl oz drop is exceptionally complex, smooth, and delicious.

Godiva
Godiva Crème Brulee 87 The roaster describes this pod as a scrumptious and delicious marriage of sweet caramel and vanilla with the smooth taste of 100% Arabica fine coffee. The dry pod smells quite vanilla and caramel like while the brewed aroma is the same. The first sip presents a sweet caramel taste layered over a decent coffee taste with the vanilla making a more subtle contribution. The mouth feel is on the thin side at 8 fl oz but not overly so for the style and is medium bodied at 5 fl oz. As it cools nothing changes as the flavors remain in balance creating a pleasing cup. I did enjoy this pod, bag or not, and they do not seem stale (I am convinced freshness is not as big a priority with flavored pods compared to unflavored ones. This 6.5g pod brewed at the 7 fl oz (or less) drop might be on your grocer’s shelf like it was on mine and is better than average for a flavored coffee.

Higgins & Burke
Higgins & Burke Passage to Columbia 90 The roaster describes this pod like so: from high on the mountains in Colombia, these beans have been hand-picked at their peak and carefully roasted to produce a classic, rich, mild body coffee with a lively, slight winy taste and aroma. The dry pod smells spicy while the brewed aroma is cocoa and brown sugar. The first sip is bright and brown sugar sweet through the middle and finish. The mouth feel is medium full and creamy. As it cools the sweet taste remains dominant but a very slight hint of astringency joins the finish – not uncommon with Colombian coffee from my experience – maybe it is the slight winy taste the roaster describes. I am surprised and pleased – this is an outstanding example of proper roasting to reveal all the story the bean want to tell. This pod brewed at the 7 fl oz drop is one of the better Colombians I can remember tasting.

Marley Coffee
Kingston City Roast91 The roaster describes this medium dark espresso roast pod as rich and versatile – this espresso pays homage to the largest city in Jamaica and the world's great appreciation of reggae. So turn your music way up, and brew a cup! The dry pod smells fresh with a hint of cocoa while the brewed aroma is bakers chocolate. The first sip produces a medium acidic tingle balanced thoroughly by chocolate sweetness mingling through the middle with chocolate winning out in the long. The mouth feel is medium to full and silky smooth. As it cools the balance taste provides the perfect backdrop for the deepening sweet chocolate finish without hint of bitterness. I like this pod a lot – the flavor, balance, and mouth feel resonates with my personal vision of a clean and balanced delicious cup of coffee. This 10.5 g pod brewed at the 7 fl oz drop is well deserving of a recommendation.

Lion's Blend Organic 88 The roaster describes this medium dark roast pod as strong and noble as the lion, this signature blend offers quality, tradition and spirit. The dry pod smells spicy and fresh while the brewed aroma is sweet. The first sip is sweet with a smokey taste rising up in the middle and intensifying through the finish. The mouth feel is rich, full and thick. As it cools the sweetness and smokiness still dominate. Marley Coffee Lion’s Blend reminds me of a French roast coffee with dark cocoa bitter sweetness but thankfully without the char even though it gives the smokey finish. This 10.5g pod brewed at the 7 fl oz drop is strong, full flavored, and certainly recommended for dark roast lovers.

Marley Coffee Mountain Roast Decaffeinated Organic 85 The roaster describes this medium roast pod as guaranteed to be 100% chemical free as this decaf uses the unique Swiss Water® Process using pure water from the mountains of British Columbia, Canada, to gently remove the caffeine. These beans maintain their distinctive, delicate and smooth characteristics. The dry pod smells spicy while the brewed aroma is sweet with hints of chocolate. The first sip is muted acidity with a caramel and nut middle carrying through to the finish. The mouth feel is medium to light bodied and silky . As it cools it brightens noticeably but also I detect a hint of astringency in the finish. Of the four Marley coffees tried to date I rate this one 4th - because the first three were so pleasing last place isn’t as bad as it might seem – I haven’t found a decaffeinated blend that matches up well with full strength yet in any format, but this brew still has a pleasing taste. This 10.5g pod brewed at the 7 fl oz drop makes a decent cup of coffee which is no small feat for a decaf.

One Love Organic Medium Ethiopia Yirgacheffe 92 The roaster describes this pod as carefully selected, 100% Ethiopian Yirgacheffe coffee beans full of floral notes and revealing hints of blueberry, cocoa and spice in a well-rounded coffee that leaves a profound cherry finish. The dry pod smells strong, spicy and fresh while the brewed aroma is graham cracker and hints of citrus. The first sip is medium bright but not citrusy while graham cracker and milk chocolate sweetness carry through the finish. The mouth feel is full and creamy and should be able to stand up to an 8 or 9 fl oz drop without loosing much intensity. As it cools some the graham cracker and chocolate remains dominant and consistent. Though not dark roasted, I think they went to the darker side of what is considered a medium roast here - but for a pod this might be a better profile than going too light. The Marley Coffee One Love 10.5g pod brewed at the 7 fl oz drop using the OPOD is highly recommended.

Talkin' Blues 100% Jamaica Blue Mountain 95The roaster describes this medium roast pod as a delicate balance of floral aroma, acidity and full body. However, it is the sweet, mellow, lingering finish that elevates this special coffee from all others. Simply the quintessential cup! The dry pod aroma is stone fruit and chocolate while the brewed aroma is between milk and dark chocolate and cherry. The first sip is medium bright with a nice fruit but not citrus tingle mingling with sweet creamy chocolate joining in early and continuing through the long finish. The mouth feel is medium full and exceptionally creamy. As it cools the chocolate taste continues to come though with as clean and resounding a taste as I can remember – superb. This 9 - 10g pod brewed at the 7 fl oz drop is outstanding.

Maxwell House
Maxwell House 70 This signature blend has always been “Good to the Last Drop” with the distinct flavor and aroma of 100% Arabica Beans. The dry pod smells decent and the brewed aroma is average. The first sip produces little tang coupled with a bit of bitterness and a hint of something burnt. The mouth feel is good and leans towards thick. As it cools that “last drop” develops an increasingly stronger bitter aftertaste. The cup is not balanced well and sours quickly after cooling. This 8.5g pod brewed at the 6oz drop is not one I would recommend. Thanks Josh for the sample.

Melitta
Melitta Buzzworthy 85 Melitta describes their pod as a choice blend of Central and South American coffees, Buzzworthy is dark-roasted for an intense aroma and a flavor that's full bodied with smoky overtones. The dry pod smells spicy and the mild brewed aroma is spicy as well. The first sip presents medium to light acidity with a smoky, but not charred finish. The mouth feel is full bodied and creamy. As it cools the flavor balances as the brightness eases while sharing the spotlight with a mild spicy, nutty semi-sweet aftertaste. This unpretentious cup fulfills a straight forward mission to dispatch morning caffeine in a palatable solution without any surprises, which for most coffee drinkers is perfectly fine and perhaps even desirable after a night of slumber. This 9g pod brewed at the 7oz drop makes a good first cup to start your day off right.

Melitta Javapod Crème Brulee 87 The roaster describes this light roast pod as the rich sweetness of caramel and vanilla swirled into dark, aromatic Arabica coffee. The dry pod smells like desert while the brewed aroma is absolutely fantastic with a creamy sweet smell. The first sip is sweet vanilla and caramel flavor layering above a medium acidic coffee that has a surprisingly long finish – perhaps outlasting the added flavoring. The mouth feel is medium light and smooth. As it cools the favor remains the same while the coffee still finishes with decent acidity and no bitterness. If you like caramel and vanilla, you will like this pod. This 9.5g pod brewed at the 8 fl oz drop with the Senseo 7810 is worth recommending for lovers of medium light roast flavored coffee.

Melitta Javapod Kona Blend 88 The roaster describes this pod as an exotic harmony of flavor. Exceptionally smooth and balanced medium roast coffee. The dry pod smells nutty while the brewed aroma is floral and nutty along with mild cocoa. The first sip presents mild acidity and cocoa in the middle as well as the medium long finish. The mouth feel is medium and velvety for this balanced cup. As it cools the sweet cocoa finish intensifies. There is some good Colombian coffee blended in with the Kona and the cup is layered with good flavor. This 9.5g pod brewed at the 7oz drop is worth recommending.

Melitta Skip the Buzz 85 The roaster says you don't need the jolt to enjoy the java. This premium 100% Colombian coffee is roasted to perfection to deliver a satisfying, full-bodied taste without the caffeine. The dry pod smells mild with a hint of roast nut and the brewed aroma is mild with a hint of roast nut. The first sip presents with a mild acidic tingle but a more pronounced heaviness similar to what you might expect in a Sumatran coffee . The mouth feel is medium full and syrupy. As it cools nothing bitter or shocking happens. This is a take no chances, low acidity coffee that happens to be decaf as well. I am not going to ding Melitta for playing it safe here considering the target market for decaf coffee usually is the same for low acidity coffee as well . This 9g pod brewed at the 7 fl oz drop makes a decent cup of coffee that happens to be decaf. Thanks Coffeeortea for the sample.

New Hampshire Coffee
New Hampshire Coffee FTO Bed & Breakfast Blend 78 The roaster describes this coffee as undeniably smooth, nice body, low acidity. The dry pod smells spicy with some cinnamon while the brewed aroma is slightly floral and spicy. The first sip presents mild acidity and some wood in the finish. The mouth feel is medium light and thin. As it cools a bit of nut flavor replaces the wood and a bitter aftertaste develops. The cup just never comes together for me. This 10g pod brewed at the 7 fl oz drop is one I would not purchase. Thanks Josh for the sample.

New Hampshire Coffee Blueberry Cobbler 75 The roaster describes this pod as probably blueberry like? The dry pod smells fruity and berry like while the brewed aroma is the same. The first sip is mild acidity and an astringent finish with a berry flavor that does not come through in the cup nearly as well as in the aroma. The mouth feel is medium and creamy. As it cools the astringency fades enough to let a bittersweet coffee taste develop in the finish. I am not a fan. This 10g pod brewed at the 7 fl oz drop fails to deliver a blueberry taste and is bested by Baronet’s Wild Blueberry – I would not recommend this pod. Thanks Josh for the sample.

New Hampshire Coffee Coconut Crème 78 The roaster offers no description for this pod. The dry pod smells like coconut flakes while the brewed aroma is similar. The first sip presents a balanced simple coffee taste underneath a layer of coconut flavor. The mouth feel is medium light and creamy. As it cools the flavor thins a bit while a hint of bitterness slips in. I prefer the Island Coconut K-Cup over this pod, but it is passable. This 10g pod brewed at the 7 fl oz drop is not a flavor I will buy a box of but is not horrible either. Thanks josh for the sample.

New Hampshire Coffee Country Blend 77 The roaster describes this A balanced blend of Central American and South American beans offering smooth crispness and a mellow aftertaste. Mild and mellow, reminiscent of the country. Light in caffeine, not in flavor. The dry pod smells nutty and spicy while the brewed aroma is brown sugar sweet. The first sip presents medium acidity, some astringency and sweetness in the middle, and less sweetness and noticeable bitterness in the finish. The mouth feel is medium and rich. As it cools the bitterness fades slightly morphing into a flatness with a taste reminiscent of a country I do not want to visit. Bitterness in the finish from first sip to a barren wasteland of flavor in the last, what else is there to tell? This 10g pod brewed at the 7oz drop is another NHC pod I will skip. Thanks Josh for the sample.

New Hampshire Coffee English Toffee 76 The roaster offers no description for this pod. The dry pod has a candy sweet smell while the brewed aroma is similar. The first sip is an artificial and hard to place taste, but something similar to warm rum comes out in the finish. The mouth feel is thin. As it cools nothing changes from the initial impressions. It tastes like artificial flavoring and not much like English toffee, and the coffee unfortunately is also unremarkable. This 10g pod brewed at the 7oz drop is one I honestly cannot recommend. Thanks to Josh for the sample.

New Hampshire Coffee French Roast 87 The roaster describes this coffee as a wonderful blend is created by using Indonesian and Central American coffees. The result is a strong, heavy textured cup with sweet, earthy undertones. The dry pod smells like roasted nut while the brewed aroma is smoky and sweet. The first sip presents nice acidity and a long smoky sweet finish. The mouth feel is medium full and creamy. As it cools the flavor remains pleasing without turning bitter.. This pod offers a classic French roast taste with bright acidity and a smoky sweet finish. This 10g pod brewed at the 7oz drop is a nice tasting French roast blend worth recommending. Thanks Josh for the sample.

New Hampshire Coffee Half Caff 76 The roaster does not describe this pod but it sounds from the name like a blend of regular and decaffeinated coffee. The dry pod offers up some pungency that quickly fades to a paper smell while the brewed aroma is weak – I am beginning to question the age of this pod the roaster sent out to sample. The first sip presents mild acidity, and a very faint woody, earthy taste in the middle and finish . The mouth feel is medium light and fairly smooth. As it cools the woody, stale taste dominates. Surely there is something wrong with this pod – either it is very old (I see no date stamp or code). This 10g pod brewed at the 7oz drop is one I will avoid if this sample truly represents the correct taste of this coffee. Thanks Josh for the sample.

New Hampshire Coffee Morning Blend 83 The roaster describes this coffee as a superbly balanced blend of Papua New Guinea, Costa Rican, and Colombian Supremo coffee. Medium bodied with a crisp finish. The dry pod smells nutty while the brewed aroma is mildly nut like as well. The first sip is a medium bright level of acidity – not citrusy – just the tingle along with some tobacco in the finish. The mouth feel is medium light and silky. As it cools the tobacco finish fades and a balanced clean taste remains. This pod is decent with it’s mild profile and never bitter finish. It runs a little thin for my taste but should please many palates looking to ease into the morning with a smooth coffee experience. This 10g pod brewed at the 7oz drop is decent for when heavy bold coffee isn’t what your sleepy eyes are looking for. Thanks Josh for the sample.

New Hampshire Coffee Soprano Roast 80 The roaster describes this coffee as a dark roast, smokey from one end to the other, light smoky and yet clean finish. low acidity. The dry pod smells like roasted nut while the brewed aroma is brown sugar and raisin sweet. The first sip is mild acidity with a woody taste and heavy char that lasts through the finish. The mouth feel is medium full and creamy. As it cools the mouth feel thins and the char mellows slightly but is still the dominant flavor. This pod is out of balance with too little to counteract the char but at least it doesn't turn bitter and does have a nice mouth feel. This 10g pod brewed at the 7oz drop is not terrible, but is bested by quite a few others in the crowded dark roast pod category. Thanks Josh for the sample.

New Hampshire Coffee Totally Chocolate 80 The roaster offers no detailed description for this pod. The dry pod smells like chocolate while the brewed aroma is similar to hot cocoa. The first sip presents a pleasing mild acidity but unfortunately the chocolate taste is weak and cannot mask a bitter taste that comes out in the finish. The mouth feel is medium and creamy, but thins a bit as the cup cools. As it cools the chocolate flavor comes through stronger and the aftertaste develops a nutty taste but the astringency is still noticeable. The chocolate flavoring in this pod just does not appeal to me. This 10g pod brewed at the 7oz drop is not one I can recommend.

Parks & Co.
Parks & Co. Bundle of Joy 86 The roaster describes this pod as bliss-infused go-juice from the heavenly rain forests of Colombia. The dry pod smells spicy while the brewed aroma is mildly sweet. The first sip presents brown sugar sweetness, some cinnamon, and a medium level of acidity. The mouth feel is medium and cradling, holding the balance of flavors together. As it cools the cup remains lively and flavorful without turning bitter. This 9g pod brewed at the 7oz drop is worth recommending.

Parks & Co. Molten Lava Java Sumatran 85 The roaster describes this medium roast pod as a flavor experience of seismic proportions from the volcanic island of Sumatra. The dry pod smells fresh like roasted nuts while the brewed aroma is smoky with hints of leather. The first slurp presents very mild but noticeable acidity along with a dark, smoky finish. The mouth feel is medium to light and smooth. As it cools the initial smoky taste gives way to the earthy, leathery flavors that define Sumatran coffee. This 9g pod brewed at the 7oz drop is worth trying if you like the Sumatran style of coffee.

Parks & Co. House Blend 88 The roaster describes this medium roast pod as rich and delightful. The dry pod smells fresh and pungent with a peppery spice note while the brewed aroma is faint but sweet with hints of roasted nut. The first sip presents a medium intensity acidic tingle and a flavor note that leans toward a chocolate sweetness through the middle and deepens in the long finish. The mouth feel is rich, medium full, and creamy – nice! As it cools the sweetness deepens and no bitterness developing. I like this pod a lot for it’s sweet taste and creamy mouth feel. This 9g pod brewed at the 7oz drop is well worth recommending.

Parks & Co. Kenya In Ya 86 The roaster describes this pod as a safari for the senses is brewed from Africa's most precious natural resource - Kenyan AA-grade Java. The dry pod smells very fresh and raisin sweet while the brewed aroma is also sweet like raisins but also offers up some citrus. The first sip presents medium acidity and cinnamon raisin sweetness. The mouth feel is medium and creamy. As it cools the acidity fades and a delicious, dark, and chocolaty sweetness dominates the middle and the finish. With it’s dark cocoa and raisin sweetness, this coffee reminds me more of a Guatemalan than the Kenyan samples I have enjoyed lately. This 9g pod brewed at the 7oz drop is unique and also is recommended.

Parks & Co One Fritter Quitter 84 The roaster describes this unflavored coffee pod as having the tantalizing taste of yummy-licious donuts roasted right in. The dry pod smells spicy and sweet, reminiscent of a fresh gingersnap or oatmeal cookie, while the brewed aroma gives up a hint of the dry sweetness rising from mild to medium tobacco and leather notes. The first sip presents a mild acidity that continues steadily though the short finish. The mouth feel is medium to light and silky at first but develops more fullness as it cools. As it cools the tingle perks up just a little and, as mentioned earlier, the mouth feel develops a creaminess I find enjoyable. This pod makes a mild, low acidity, light bodied, creamy cup – no fruit bowl, no chocolate bomb, just a simple, inoffensive and non-bitter cup of coffee – a safe play that is perfect for serving to guests if their preferences are not yet discovered. This 9g pod brewed at the 7oz drop would be a good choice in a multi-user environment like an office or meeting room since most would find something to like in the cup.

Parks & Co. Sunny Side Up Breakfast Blend 83 The roaster describes this medium light roast pod as a smooth morning blend. The dry pod smells pungent right after opening the wrapper but transitions quickly to a spicy yet slightly sweet fragrance while the brewed aroma is mild with hints of floral notes along with roasted nut. The first sip presents a low level of acidity joined by a roast nut note in the finish. The mouth feel is medium and smooth. As it cools the cup thins a bit. This one is a little bland for my tastes and not nearly as bright as I expect from a breakfast blend – not offensive though and definitely a safe play for an office or visitors lobby. This 9g pod brewed at the 7oz drop should please those not looking for an overly bright first cup of the day.

I've talked to Baronet about these pods and better understand the concept behind them. The bag is nitrogen flushed at less than 1% oxygen and the idea is that for someone who only drinks the open bag and doesn't change coffees, that you can consume the whole bag in a few days before they truly stale, so in theory when the bag is first opened, your coffee should be as fresh as their individually wrapped 10g and 12g pods.

Senseo pods on the other hand are basically stale when you first open the bag as their packaging methods and materials can't properly maintain freshness.

My Pod Reviews (Continued from first and third posts in this thread)

In-Depth Tasting Notes Part III (in alphabetical order):
Please note that due to individual post size limits on the forum not all the information fits in one post.

If you are looking for information on a particular pod not found in this post, the in depth reviews are split over more than one post and begin in the first post of this thread.

Reunion Island
Reunion Island Blueberry Pie 89 The roaster describes this medium light roast flavored pod as tasting like blueberry pie. The dry pod smells like a delicious fresh baked blueberry pie while the brewed aroma is fruity like berries. The first sip is bright with an acidic tang coming from the coffee which the blueberry flavor definitely enhances though the short finish will leave you soon wanting more. The mouth feel is medium light and delicate. As it cools the brightness extends further with a deeper sweetness in the finish while the mouth feel becomes creamy too - iced coffee anyone? I like this one - no surprises - just delicious blueberry pie flavoring riding on top of some decent coffee underneath. This 10g pod brewed at the 7 fl oz drop is a safe recommendation if fruity berry flavored coffee is to your liking. I bet it is great as an iced coffee too.

Reunion Island Fair Trade Certified Brazil Ouro Fino 92 The roaster describes this 12g pod as a light roast that highlights this coffee’s strong blueberry essence, along with notes of port and maple syrup. The dry pod aroma is intense with berry fruit while the brewed aroma is bright and tangy also. The first sip is bright and acidic with a tart berry tang (similar to a Kenya Tegu I tried recently) with a sweet candy taste joining the initial acidity through what turns out to be a nice medium length finish . The mouth feel is medium bodied, creamy textured and well balanced – the flavors do layer with nice clarity. As it cools the delicious berry tart taste remains dominant, though tempered some as the candy sweetness strengthens. In the cup the intense berry taste of this microlot reminds me of the Reunion Island Colombia Las Hermosas (which is excellent as a whole bean) though the Las Hermosas is sweeter compared to this cup’s tart taste. This Brazilian pod, brewed with 8 fl oz water, is well worth recommending if bright Ethiopian or Kenyan coffee is to your liking – to me it compares very favorably.

Reunion Island Cinnamon Sticky Bun Medium Roast - 88 - The dry coffee smells like a pan full of freshly baked cinnamon sticky buns right from the oven while the brewed aroma is honey bun sweetness along with a cinnamon aroma. The first sip gives moderate acidity mixing with the cinnamon and spice note found in the wet aroma. The mouth feel is medium to medium light and silky. As it cools the flavor remains strong with no hint of bitterness. I shared this coffee with my flavored coffee panel of experts and the opinion is a unanimous and enthusiastic two thumbs up followed by requests for another cup and then they confiscated the remaining pods - highly recommended!

Reunion Island Colombia Decaf 83 The roaster describes this pod as high grown coffee that retains its rich flavor through decaf processing . The dry pod smells roasted nuts and the brewed aroma is mild cocoa. The first sip is extremely bright. The mouth feel is medium and smooth. As it cools the snap fades just a bit, but remains the predominant flavor. I could not tell from the taste this was decaf, but I could tell it is light and bright which I usually like. This 9.5g pod brewed at the 7oz drop is decent coffee, decaf or not. Thanks to coffeeortea for the sample.

Reunion Island RA Costa Rica La Hilda 87 The roaster describes this medium roast pod as having a floral nose to start, with the sweetness of toasted almonds and a light citric finish. The dry pod smells floral and orange citrusy while the brewed aroma is brown sugar and orange citrus. The first sip is bright and tangy citrus which tapers slightly in the medium length finish. The mouth feel is rich, medium full, and velvety. As it cools the acidity tones down a bit and the brown sugar found in the brewed aroma jumps up along with a faint hint of astringency in the finish. Lets get something out of the way first - this is one bright pod. I like bright acidity so this flavor is right up my alley – the mouth feel and sweetness in the cooling finish are bonuses but I would have liked it even without these additions. This 12g pod brewed at the 7 fl oz drop is highly recommended if you like bright acidic coffee but if low acidity dark roasted, earthy coffee suits your taste maybe this one shouldn’t be your first choice.

Reunion Island Ethiopia Oromia FT & Organic 87 The roaster describes this pod as a unique coffee with pleasant sweetness & blueberry notes. The dry pod smells nondescript and the brewed aroma is light and floral. The first sip delivers a mild acidic citrus lemony note that creates a very dry sensation on my palate. The mouth feel is medium thin and silky smooth. As it cools the taste remains consistently citrus/lemony tart. This is an interesting pod since not many out there create a note this sharp without turning either sweet nor astringent after cooling. This 9.5g pod brewed at the 7oz drop is very good with a nice dry lemony snap. Thanks to starryeyes for the sample!

Reunion Island Rain Forest Alliance Certified Organic Flores Green Dragon 87 The roaster describes this pod as a medium dark Viennese roast which develops its dried fruit and sweet chocolate notes along with a slightly floral aroma. The dry pod smells spicy and nutty while the brewed aroma is mild caramel and some nuttiness. The first sip presents mild acidity and strong floral notes joining a classic earthy and leathery middle lasting through a medium short finish. The mouth feel is medium full and syrupy but not cloying. As it cools the cup sweetens considerably as the floral note tapers to let the sweetness through. The roaster’s tasting notes are on track especially with milk or letting the cup cool a bit if taken black. This 12g pod brewed at the 7 fl oz drop makes a very nice cup of coffee.

Reunion Island Guatemalan Rain Forest Alliance 80 Reunion Island says this medium roast coffee offers a full flavor with notes of toasted walnut and cocoa powder. The dry pod has an earthy, cocoa smell and the brewed aroma is relatively mild. The first sip gives up a bittersweet cocoa taste along with mild acidity. The mouth feel is medium at 6oz, but thin at 7 or 8oz. As it cools more chocolate develops in the finish and the sharpness mutes a bit, although at 6oz the sharpness remains pronounced. The cup is actually a paradox by being too weak at 8oz and too unbalanced at 6oz. At 7oz the earthiness overshadows the cocoa, so there is no happy medium either. This 9.5g pod does not make a bad cup of coffee, but better pods are easy to find.

Reunion Island Holiday Blend 88 The roaster says this elegant blend is created using 100% certified organic coffees that have been handpicked from select highland estates. We roast this blend to a medium-dark Viennese color to add body and caramelized undertones. The dry pod smells faintly sweet and the brewed aroma is caramel. The first sip presents mild acidity and caramel sweetness. The mouth feel is medium and creamy smooth. As it cools nothing new happens – this one is very balanced and finishes without bitterness. Even though this is a medium dark roast coffee, there is no char or burnt taste. This 9.5g pod brewed at the 7oz drop is smooth, flavorful (but not flavored) and worth a recommendation.

Reunion Island Maple Cream 86 The roaster describes this pod as a guilt-free indulgence featuring the unmistakable aroma of maple syrup and a rich, creamy flavor. The dry pod smells like maple syrup with hints of cream while the brewed aroma is syrupy sweet. The first sip is lightly acidic while providing the proper backdrop for the maple syrup and cream flavors to spring up on to the tongue and is joined by a subtle roast nut note which helps carry the maple cream flavor through to the finish. The mouth feel is light to medium with a silky body. As it cools the advertised flavors continue to rise above an undercurrent of decent coffee taste. Quite a few flavored pods develop some astringency as the cup cools – thankfully this one does not. My guess is some roasters flavor less than stellar coffee to move it along, but not so with this offering - underneath the flavoring I detect a mild yet balanced quality coffee that just happens to be flavored. If you like sweet caramel and cream flavored coffee or flavored coffee in general then Reunion Island Maple Cream is sure to please.

Reunion Island S.U.F. Kilimanjaro Dark 83 Reunion Island sources this from Sweet Unity Farms and describes this as bold Tanzanian coffee that is handpicked from the slopes of Mt Kilimanjaro. The dry pod smells fresh and the brewed aroma is rich and toasty. The first sip is citrusy with a earthiness bringing up the rear for balance. The mouth feel is medium to full. As it cools the citrus fades but nothing pops up to catch my attention and the earthiness turns the volume down as well. The cup does not turn bitter, and is balanced, and nothing tastes off, but for some reason the sum does not equal the parts. Perhaps I expect more richness and bold taste when “Dark” is labeled on the wrapper. This 9.5g pod brewed at the 7oz drop is decent but it my search for the best pod from the Kilimanjaro region must continue.

Reunion Island S.U.F. Mahale Highlands 82 Reunion Island says this coffee is roasted to a medium color to develop optimal flavor. Mahale Highlands has a bright taste and wonderful aroma to start your day. The dry pod smells good and the brewed aroma is mild with a toasty smell. The first sip presents a medium acidity with pleasant citrus notes rising from a enough of an earthy base to keep the flavors balanced. The mouth feel is medium but delicate. As it cools the brightness maintains without any bitter aftertaste. This cup reminds me of a lot of light to medium roast breakfast blends in both taste and body. This 9.5g pod brewed at the 7oz drop makes a decent first cup if lighter roasts are your preference.

Reunion Island FTO Privateer Dark Extra Bold 91 Reunion Island describes Privateer Dark coffee pods as their flagship blend featuring the best of Central American, Java and East Africa. The dry pod smells dark, spicy, and a bit like cinnamon while the brewed aroma toasty and floral. The first sip presents a medium acidity and a berry sweetness. The mouth feel is medium full and rich. As it cools, the berry sweetness softens enough for a bittersweet toasty flavor to push forward and introduce itself to your tongue. This is my favorite pod so far from Reunion Island. The floral notes from the East African beans are tempered by the darker roasting style and skillful blending of the Java and sweet Central American beans. This 12g pod brewed at the 8oz drop is one I would be happy to brew any time.

Reunion Island Sumatra Ketambe Dark 87 Reunion Island says this coffee is cultivated in the warm, humid climate found on this Indonesian island’s Northern highlands. Sumatra is celebrated around the globe for its bold, heavy, body and smoked spice flavor. The roast meter on the box reports maximum bold darkness. The dry pod smells fresh and the brewed aroma is raisins and cinnamon. The first sip is spicy with a medium to light tingle, but the dark roast smokiness or char is absent. The mouth feel is medium and smooth. As it cools a bit, the brightness develops into a sharper note that mingles with a hint of those sweet raisins found in the aroma. This 9.5g pod brewed at the 7oz drop is a good example of a Sumatran, and also makes a good cup of coffee.

Reunion Island Sumatra Koro 87 The roaster describes this coffee as an organic coffee featuring an earthy body and notes of cinnamon and dark cherry. The brewed aroma is very mild and hard to distinguish but my sample is dated so nothing outstanding was expected – no ding on the coffee here. The first sip presents medium bright lemon (maybe cherry?) acidity balanced by a subtle earthiness rounding to a medium length brown sugar finish. The mouth feel is medium and velvety. As it cools the initial brightness remains dominant while tempering only slightly . This is not the typical Sumatra experience so it might disappoint one looking for muted acidity muted by earthy depth. That said, I like this flavor and can recommend this pod to any fan of bright coffee.

Reunion Island Rainforest Alliance Certified Tanzania Ngoro Ngoro - 90 This Medium Roast pod is fruity sweet on the front, almost syrupy in mouth feel, and does develop rich caramel sweetness in the finish. Also worth noting, these beans have a heavenly aroma. This reminds me a lot of what I like in a Kenya Gran Cru - balanced acidity and deeper, layered flavors through out. Well done with the Ngoro Ngoro RI! :)

Reunion Island S.U.F. Tanzania 80 Reunion Island sources this from Sweet Unity Farms and describes this as Tanzanian coffee grown on the slopes of Mt Kilimanjaro, and this coffee is rich, winey and aromatic. The dry pod smells rich and the brewed aroma matches this. The first sip presents a sharp winey note. The mouth feel is medium. As it cools no richness or body develops – tanginess is the only story this cup can tell. Its not bitter even with the pronounced acidity and it finishes with a dry aftertaste. This 9.5g pod was brewed at the 6oz drop and does produce the wine like notes and is aromatic as Reunion Island Claims. This coffee is perhaps too one-dimensional to stand alone but might make an interesting addition in a blend.

Senseo
Senseo Espresso Roast 88The roaster describes this pod as one that will give you a full, smooth taste and aroma allowing indulgence in a smooth and strong coffee with a fine crema layer. Senseo recommends using their espresso pod adapter which I do not own – here is my take anyway. The dry pod smells pungent and smoky while the brewed aroma is a smoky caramel. The first sip is surprisingly sweet with medium acidity and a nice smoky bittersweet finish. The mouth feel is medium full and creamy. As it cools the bittersweet cocoa in the finish strengthens a bit. Espresso roast can mean many things – in this pod it means French roast, and a decent one at that. A quick disclaimer – I did brew two pods at a time since the 8 fl oz drop is all my Senseo brewer is designed to deliver but one pod should work fine at the smaller drop in a standard Senseo machine. This 7g pod (actually pods) brewed at the 8 fl oz drop reminds me of the very nice Reunion Island French roast is the best dark roast pod in the Senseo line up.

Timothy's
Timothy's Kona Blend 88 Timothy's says you will enjoy the taste sensation of tropical fruits and hints of chocolate. The dry pod smells rich, fresh and sweet while the brewed aroma is a milder version of the same. The first sip presents bright acidity and hints of sweetness. The mouth feel is medium and silky smooth. As it cools the semi-sweet dark chocolate taste provides balance by mellowing the initial brightness. This tastes like an extra smooth version of a Colombian, but with only 20% Kona and 80% something else; this should not be new news. This 10g pod brewed at the 7oz drop is a nice refined, balanced, semi-sweet, and enjoyable blend Kona lovers should try.

Van Houtte
Van Houtte 100% Colombian 86 Van Houtte describes their pod as being made with the highest quality coffee beans and roasted to provide a rich flavor, good acidity and heady aroma. The dry pod smells pungent and fresh while the brewed aroma is mild. The first sip offers up mild initial acidity, a toasty middle, and then a bittersweet aftertaste. The mouth feel is very full and balanced. As it cools it remains tingly while a caramel taste strengthens to noticeably sweeten the finish. This pod makes a really smooth, enjoyable, and full bodied cup of coffee. This 10g pod brewed at the 8oz drop is very tasty.

Van Houtte House Blend 86 Van Houtte describes this pod as smooth, aromatic and mild. The dry pod smells fresh and mildly spicy while the brewed aroma is cinnamon and raisin with a faint cocoa scent mixing in. The first sip presents medium acidity, bold earthiness, and a hint of cocoa sweet finish. The mouth feel is medium full and creamy. As it cools the earthiness and sweetness deepen. This is a bold, satisfying blend. This 10g pod brewed at the 7oz drop should please someone looking for low acidity and rich flavor.

Van Houtte Mexico FTO 90 Van Houtte describes their pod as a very dark roast coffee with ample body and light bitter notes. The dry pod smells Pungent, fresh, and nutty while the brewed aroma is spicy cinnamon. The first sip is deep, rich, earthy and bold with a hint of acidic tingle. The mouth feel is thick and creamy. As it cools nothing much changes – this is balanced from first sip to finish with a dark cocoa bitter sweetness and slight but noticeable tingle . This 10g pod brewed at the 7oz drop certainly is an extra bold pod dark roast coffee lovers should check out.

Van Houtte Midnight Express 92 Van Houtte describes their pod as their darkest yet! This very bold coffee has an intense charcoal flavor, heavy body, and excellent acidity with intriguing spicy undertones. The rich aroma of the dry pod transfers nicely to the brewed cup. The first sip is really bold with borderline char, but not burnt tasting, with medium acidity. The mouth feel is thick – this is full bodied, really enjoyable. As it cools it becomes more rich and chewy. I expected a cup this full bodied to turn a little bitter after cooling, but the aftertaste remained pleasing till the end. This 11-12g pod (my scale bounced from one number to the other) brewed at the 8oz drop that the packaging recommends makes a great dark roast cup of coffee. Thanks Josh for the sample.

Wolfgang Puck
Wolfgang Puck Sumatra Kopi Raya 80 This is listed as a dark roast Sumatran offering full body and spicy notes. The dry pod smells nutty and the brewed aroma is mild and floral with a hint of cinnamon. The first sip is spicy with medium acidity and an earthy and spicy finish. The mouth feel is medium full and thick, but thins a bit as it cools. Also as it cools the tingle fades and an astringency builds. This cup starts with such promise, but changes. I am not sure why this happens, but it does. This 9g pod brewed at the 7oz drop would be great if it could stay consistent with the initial taste.

Discontinued Pod Section:
The section below contains in depth reviews of pods that are no longer, to my knowledge, being produced but still might be available so I chose not to delete them entirely.

Café Halo
Café Halo Breakfast Blend 86 Café Halo describes this pod as a hearty, sweet brew with an intense fragrance from a bold blend of 100% Arabica Latin American coffee that is complex and silky-smooth, great all day long. The dry pod smells pungent and fresh and the brewed aroma is a little spicy and a little nutty. The first sip is bright and tingly but I detect a subtle earthy chocolate note too. The mouth feel is medium and silky. As it cools the brightness stays right out in front with a bit of that earthy touch of sweetness providing balance. This is a good cup of coffee without any surprises or flaws while representing the breakfast blend donut shop style very nicely. This 7.5g pod brewed at the 7oz drop really is a decent breakfast blend coffee.

Café Halo 100% Colombian 86 Café Halo describes this pod as 100% classic estate Colombian coffee that is smooth, bright, and full flavored while complex and clean with medium body. The dry pod smells pungent and fresh while the brewed aroma is mild with some dark roasted nut smell. The first sip presents medium acidity and tingle while a Starbucks like char provides the finish. The mouth feel is medium and smooth. As it cools the cup remains lively while the char still provides the finish – think of the taste of the Coffee People Jet Fuel K-Cup and you have this one nailed. This 7.5g pod brewed at the 6 - 7oz drop is decent if you like darker roast coffee.

Café Halo Ethical Addiction 86 Café Halo describes this pod as their darkest of dark roasts for the strong at heart with an intense dark-roast flavor and sublime richness. The dry pod smells pungent and the brewed aroma is really dark and smoky. The first sip presents pronounced acidity and a bittersweet smokey char finish. The mouth feel is medium full and quite firm. As it cools the profile stays consistent as the yin and yang flavors of brightness and smoky darkness play out till the end. The cup does not turn bitter and the taste is fine for a dark roast coffee. This 7.5g pod brewed at the 7oz drop is nice by any standard for dark roasts.

Café Halo French Roast 86 Café Halo describes this pod as a special blend of mountain and shade grown 100% Arabica coffee roasted to perfection to bring out intense flavor with a hint of smokiness with low acidity, fully body, and bold flavor. The dry pod smells pungent like most dark roasts and the brewed aroma is mild dark roasted nut. The first sip presents a bit of acidity balanced initially by the bittersweet dark roast taste that lasts through the middle and finish. The mouth feel is medium and with a syrupy feel. As it cools the finish sweetens a bit but that dark roast almost Starbucks like bittersweet tang is still the dominant flavor note. This 7.5g pod brewed at the 4 - 5 fl oz drop tastes decent and satisfies my occasional dark French roast craving.

Café Halo House Blend Natural 86 Café Halo describes this pod as medium-bodied ,full flavored with a crisp, refreshing finish that is complex, clean, and delicious. The dry pod smells very nutty and the brewed aroma is mild but semisweet. The first sip is medium acidic, but not in a citrusy way, followed by a sweet finish. The mouth feel is medium and creamy. As it cools the acidic flavor sharpens slightly while the semisweet finish remains unchanged. This is a fair representation of the house blend style – more body than sharp bite. This 7.5g pod brewed at the 6 oz drop packs a lot of rich flavor and an above average mouth feel so is certainly worth trying – especially recommended if you do not prefer bright coffee.

Café Halo Kona Dark Blend 86 Café Halo describes this pod as a touch of Aloha with a smooth, balanced, luscious taste from the highest grade of hand-harvested Kona coffee roasted and blended to perfection producing a bold, rich, full flavor with a notable harmony. The dry pod smells fresh and earthy while the brewed aroma is mild. The first sip presents mild acidity with a sweet caramel finish. The mouth feel is medium and smooth. As it cools the cup livens up a bit on the tongue while a nice dark roasted bittersweet flavor rounds out the finish. This 7.5g pod brewed at the 7oz drop is really smooth and balanced.

Café Halo Sumatran Blend 85 Café Halo describes this pod as the finest Sumatra coffee, a 100% Arabica blend with a sweet, pungent earthiness and a wonderful complexity of flavor with a heady aroma. The dry pod smells unremarkable and the brewed aroma is smoky. The first sip presents medium to light tingle mixed with a smoky almost French roast like char, but not as intense. The mouth feel is thick and syrupy. As it cools the earlier hint of char intensifies and the mild tingle from the acidity maintains for a lively finish. The cup is pretty straightforward for a dark roast Sumatran, without any real surprises. You get a dark roast, full bodied cup with medium to low acidity, good flavor, and no bitterness. This 7.5g pod brewed at the 7oz drop makes a decent cup of Sumatran coffee.

Café Halo World Blend 85 Café Halo describes this pod as a light to medium roast blended to create a superb flavor with distinct chocolate tones and a heady aroma with a clean and mellow finish. The dry pod smells more pungent than I expect from light to medium roast coffee, and the brewed aroma is mild to medium and a bit smoky. The first sip presents a decent level of acidity with a chocolaty, caramel finish. The mouth feel is medium and smooth. As it cools it picks up some snap but doesn’t get bitter. This 7.5g pod brewed at the 6oz drop makes a really smooth coffee that does not lead the pack of milder coffee offerings, but it certainly does not get left behind either.

Coffee Artisan Papua New Guinea 80 The Coffee Artisan says to expect a full body and a sweet fruity acidity that develops as this coffee cools. I disagree. The lively mouth feel from the sweet fruity acidity is evident from the first slurp. The aroma is average for a light roast - not offensive but not outstanding either. As it cools more pronounced undercurrents of sweetness mingle with the brightness but this coffee maintains its balance till the end. This 10g pod held up well at an 8oz drop. I would seriously recommend buying a box of these.

Coffee Artisan 100% Jamaican Blue Mountain 85 The Coffee Artisan says this coffee is slow roasted to a Light or City Roast to bring out the best possible flavor. The aroma in the cup is pleasant. I get a pronounced tang that tapers into a slight bitterness in on the first slurp.

Baronet Fair Trade Organic French Roast ***

That pod is in my top five favourites, only in the 12 g. size and under the Cafe Invento name.

That pod is an excellent representation of the French roast style. I looked back at my tasting notes - the only place I gave lower marks was the mouth feel for this pod - a larger pod (or 6oz drop with this pod) might increase the score in this category. I have plenty of these pods (53 more, to be exact) so if this one tastes better at 6oz after another sample, I will update the results.

By the way, what size drop do you recommend for the 12g pods? I have a box of 12g Baronet Blast pods I will try soon.

For me 8 oz. works fine. I wouldn't go larger. The BLAST pods are what used to be sold as Ogopogo Ride under the Cafe Invento flag. I liked them well enough.

Yeah, I usually go 8 oz and no more than 9 oz max. I do like a strong cup of coffee and I find the 12 g. French Roast delivers.
