I received my Clever Coffee Dripper today from Zombie.com and Amazon should deliver my digital scale tomorrow. I picked up this model:

EatSmart Precision Pro - Multifunction Digital Kitchen Scale

# Max weight 11lbs; Displays ounces/lbs/grams/kgs; Graduation .05 oz / 1 gram
# Tare feature; Eliminate the weight of a plate

I plan to brew this coffee according to the instructional video on the Sweet Maria's site by weighing the coffee and the water - I think this scale will be up to the task - If I am lucky my set of double wall glass Bodum Povina cups will get here at the same time. (I am worried about the Bodum cups since the reviews on Amazon report poor durability - I will find out soon enough), but the coffee should get a real chance to shine using this method.

I hope you are enjoying yourself (and some good coffee) on your vacation!

Nice! I have the same set-up, except that my digital scale is less sensitive (1 oz. rather than .5 oz.). I haven't tried brewing straight into the Bodum glasses. Should work just fine if you're careful.

About the Bodum line, my first order of two Pavina glasses arrived with one broken. Amazon took care of me. I broke two myself (one while washing and another by dropping onto tile) and managed to convince Bodum to send me two new ones somehow. These replacements seem thicker-walled. I've had better luck with them since.

A tip: try scaling back Sweet Maria's "recipe" for the CCD. I found I wanted to start with 10 oz. of water rather than 12. Single-serve coffee has gotten me used to an 8-oz. mug, you know?

Wish I could say I'm having good coffee in Trinidad. Today I unwittingly heated up a day-old cup that had been left in the carafe. Gah. I might raid my brother-in-law's k-cup stash tomorrow morning!

Eric, #2 is probably still a killer bridesmaid! How will you brew it? Russ, I'll get to the pod vs. beans comparison next week once I'm back from vacation.

I tried the Columbia Bellavista COE today - great nose, with a chocolate taste balancing the brightness. More chocolate as it cools - decent mouth feel too. My homemade pod would get 4 stars from me, but the CCD produces a richer cup.

I will try the Columbia COE from Fratello this weekend too - what a great selection of coffee I get to enjoy!

Josh: Have you considered using the VydorScope method for your pod vs beans shoot-out?

That is, if there's any beans left Wink

I'd been planning to do pod (OPOD) vs. beans (CCD), but I can also do pod vs. beans in a homemade pod. Thanks...good idea. These comparisons are next on my list. Amazingly, I do still have some Costa Rican COE whole bean left. It's in good shape too thanks to my little vacuum-sealed container. I just finished a comparison of the pod version of the Costa Rican COE brewed in the OPOD vs. the CCD, which I'll write up soon. To preview, the OPOD won.

Did your Fratello whole bean ever arrive, Geir?

That's rather unexpected, isn't it?

Not really. I didn't use whole bean for this one, just ground coffee from the pod. You seem to always need more coffee, relatively speaking, with full immersion/manual pour-over vs. pod brewing.

Good one re: Thailand!

Sorry. Misread. Thought it was whole beans vs pod.

Too lazy to check, but I think the results from my pods by AeroPress experiment was 5 oz water to a TCA Dark Side to get the same strength as a 7 oz Senseo brew.

Pods have personality, they talk, they go to Thailand for vacation, now let me see a K-Cup do that Wink

Speaking of Thailand, my sister is living next door in Laos at the moment. I'll have to ask her what their coffee drinking habits and preferences are. I'll be interested to see to what extent it may be influenced by the French given Lao history.

The little I've heard it sounds like they drink it quite strong with sweetened condensed milk like their neighbors in Vietnam.

Hope the coffee there isn't too laosy. Rolling Eyes

Got beans Smile

Colombian Villarica and Costa Rican Calle de Copey.

Unfortunately/Luckily my Bunn MCP arrive today as well, so I'm way to caffeinated to grind and brew these treasures.
I consider to wait until the weekend so I can take my time with them.

Now that's what I call a coffee-lovin' day! Happy for you. You and I can compare notes on the Costa Rican COE beans.

A lot of coffee happiness indeed.

I have to order some samplers of the Costa Rican COE pods for comparison. Have a box of the Colombian pods.

Since I only dabble in whole bean I'm tempted to get a cheap(er) manual burr grinder like Hario makes instead of something electric (Baratza, etc.).

Update: I just ordered a manual burr grinder!

http://www.sweetmarias.com/prod.hario_skerton.php

Its specialty is the finer grinds, which will work well for homemade pods. Plus, the price is right. Since I'm using my PayPal slush fund to pay, it's effectively free. Should have it by mid-week if all goes well.
