ok so my schedule and the weather finally lined up so i could make an attempt at a roast. i gathered up the following:
regal brand bread machine (the knead cycle will last 20mins- so it never stops stirring)
chicago brand 2 setting heat gun (was on sale at harbor freight)
fan
metal colander
oven mitt
kenya aa beans
I started by carefully measuring out 1/2 lb of the beans. i thought being my first try i should only go for 1/2lb in case i really mess up. After trying a 'dry run' in the bread machine i determined it actually stirs the beans better with a larger amount, so i put the whole lb of beans in a bowl at the ready.
So i set up my work area outside and started the knead cycle on the breadmachine and held the heatgun on low setting just inside the metal pan and heated it for one minute. the bread machine does some funky stirring/pausing for the 1st minute then starts to spin constantly. At this point i dumped in the lb of beans, started my timer and kept the heat gun about 1" above the beans. it seemed for a long time nothing was happening. I also had the fan on and pointed in the direction of the heat gun to help blow the exiting chaff away and not let it all get sucked into the heat gun inlet. After several minutes i started noticing the color change taking place and moved the heat gun to the high setting. now i had no idea what to listen for, but just knew from, reading that i would know it when i heard it. the beans bouncing around in the metal bowl made a lot of noise so i was listening closely and about 10:10 in i heard it for sure. 1st crack started and lasted until about 11:00. I had already decide that even though i usually prefer the darker roasts, i was going to target about a city/full city roast. about 12 mins in a started to get some smoke, (oh and since about 5-7 mins in i was getting alot of chaff also) and the beans appeared to be getting darker more quickly. i decided to pull the roast 12:45 and here is where things didnt go so smoothly lol. i put on the oven mitt and then didnt have the ability to quickly grab the metal rod that pulls the metal pan outta the machine, took me longer than i would have liked. then i dumped the beans into the metal colander and focused the fan on them and shook them around. i really overestimated the amount of cooling i could achieve. these things were HOT.. i sifted them around and stirred then when and got a big cookie sheet and dumped them out on that in a single layer, within a minute the entire cooking sheet was really warm. It took about 6-8 mins to actually get these things to room temp. next time i need to have a better plan for cooling.
end result is that if i compare to the color guide on sweetmarias it lloks like i have about a vienna roast, the beans are still brown, though dark. they are not at all black or oily. i am really impressed with the uniform coloring of the batch considering i did 1lb of beans at once. now the hard part to wait to try them. i work a crazy day tomorrow with a day shift then home then back for anight shift so i hope the beans will have rested enough by about 9pm (about 24 hours).
ok im off to bed and my beans are headed in a valve bag to rest
they really are darker than the pics

Stopping the roast where you want it doesn't happen until your second roast. Well, maybe the third. The good news is that even when you miss, the coffee is usually great. The oils will come to the surface as the beans rest.

Bucfanmike, welcome to the wonderful world of roasting. It gives great pleasure and taste when you control the roast profile. I also find it to be relaxing.
The first roast with my Gene Cafe was using SweetMaria's Puro Scuro blend ( I perfer darker roasts). I kept some of the beans as a reminder of starting the cool down cycle BEFORE the beans get to the point where you want them to finish at. The words charcoal briquets comes to mind..... , It does get better as you find the correct "timing".
Podster, I hope to find time to roast a couple of pounds next weekend. If so, I will upload some pictures of the exhaust system I came up with for the Gene Cafe. I now get virtually no smoke in the house (makes for a VERY happy family).
You might also try coffeebeancorral.com for some beans. SweetMaria's has been out of my favorite Costa Rican so I ordered about 10 pounds from Coffee Bean Corral and was impressed by their pricing and speed. _________________ Coffee, Chocolate, Men - Some things are better rich.

it was great cuz it does all the stirring, and the pan is perfect for taking the high heat needed.
but you should know that you dont use any heat from the breadmachine itself. all the heat comes from a heatgun. i got a 2 speed one at harbor freight was 20 on sale for 10. _________________ Hi, Im Mike and I have an addiction...

It's almost like drinking coffee for the first time. And the satisfaction of drinking coffee that you roasted yourself is immense. I would love to get a roaster that does 1/2 to a full pound. Alas, they told me on Friday that my job will be ending on Sept. 2. I guess my Behmor or Gene Cafe will have to wait. _________________ Grindmaster OPOD x2 (retired)

I am a little confused here ---what does the roaster you have now do? If you buy a regular roaster, it doesn't roast a half pound? _________________ OPOD & Romeo |
