Keurig and a burnt mineral smell/plastic smell

Postby jamespias » Sun Sep 24, 2006 1:38 pm

I just purchased a Keurig B60 yesterday. When i brew coffee or just heat up water I can smell/taste a burnt smell of minerals maybe. It smells like our clothes iron.

any ideas how to get rid of it?

Could just be that 'new heated plastic' smell?

If it's coming from the inside, and tainting the coffee/water I'd run the vinegar trick through it to see if it changes. Worth a shot.

I'd say run a bunch of batches of hot water through there, see what happens.

My B50 I got a month ago had the same problem, and quite severely. The smell reminded me of when you leave CDs trapped in a small space under the sun for hours, like rancid plastic and metal. You could smell it very clearly off the outside of the machine and in the water.

I would say to run 20-30 cups of water through it, over a period of a few days. Also, the smell seemed to dissipate a little just by sitting out of the box for a week or two.

it's been rare, but we've had a few people come here with that problem.. if you've tried all of the flushing and nothing helps, call keurig and explain the problem..
own:
* Nespresso C100 (primary)
* Aerobie Aeropress
* Bunn My Cafe (I got this back from my dad)
* Keurig Ultra B50 (my dad has this one now..)

Plastic tasting coffee??? New Keurig.

Postby NDJollyMon » Fri Oct 27, 2006 11:55 am

Ok...I busted out a new Keurig B 50...and have the same issue. HEAVY 'heated-plastic' type smell and taste. (like Tupperware falling on the heating element in the dishwasher)

When I filled up the machine to put it in service...I flushed it with a tank and a half of water. I also hand-washed the removable parts with dish soap. After several cups of coffee...it still smells like plastic.

When I got my first B50, I do remember having a slight taste issue...and it went away eventually. This one is much stronger. I will continue to flush it/use it and report my findings. I'm fully expecting this to go away.

I wanted to revive this thread to share the problem. Anyone buying a new Keurig will now know what to look for. I think someone new to SSC may be seriously turned off tasting this coffee without knowing this.

No matter what K-cup I put in, it all tastes like plastic. Maybe I'll run a vinegar cycle and see what happens.

That's not encouraging! My B60 just developed a leak and Keurig is sending me a new one to replace it. Hopefully I'll get one without the plastic problem!

I had absolutely none of this with my B40, not even a mild plasticky-taste from the get-go. I would be pretty sure the machines that smell this strongly are defective.

I've reported it to Keurig to make sure.

UPDATE:

Keurig's official answer (to get rid of this 'new brewer taste') was:
Flush with more water. I did, and it didn't change the taste/odor. After a total of 15 tanks of water...it didn't change.

Their next remedy was:
Run a tank of vinegar through it followed by a couple tanks of water.
I did...and it seems to have subsided with that. I'll run it again tomorrow...just to be sure it's completely gone...but it looks as if this did the trick. :D

No kidding! I'm surprised they didn't just take it back. Maybe they changed how they make them, but I tell you, mine never did anything like that.

Hope it works! Or if it doesn't, hope they take it back with no more hoops for you to jump through.

They told me if the vinegar didn't work...they'd switch it out for me.
I'll know for sure tomorrow when I try it out.

I didn't want to start a new thread so am posting my question here. If you want to ship a used Keurig, how do you get the water out of the inside? Is it the same as the Bunn where you just leave it in there and nothing happens?

Thanks.

no way to get it out, if you are shipping to a cold weather climate best to use an RV type antifreeze, or vodka.
