Hi

Here's my story, I hope someone can help.

I purchased a Keurig machine last year at Costco because I noticed that the husband was not holding up his end of the coffee drinking some days and half a pot was going to waste ( sinful). I also like the "fresh pot every time" aspect of the single serve. I stopped using the Kcups after a few months because it was tedious busting them open to compost the coffee grounds then not being sure if the plastic could be recycled (the company said they are working on this). So we went the My Kcup route but we are such slobs we ended up with coffee grounds all over the kitchen trying to fill and empty the little thing. Enter the Pod holster. I bought it a couple weeks ago and it works great. But I'm back to the waste issue with the individually wrapped pods. I like the quality of the larger pods (8 gm +) but the only ones I can find that aren't individually wrapped are the smaller Senseo 7 gram pods. I can trade off a little freshness in the coffee if I don't have to throw away the foil or plastic envelope each time. I also like to use fair trade coffee. Can the larger pods be bought in bulk packages?
Thank you,
Leann

Hate to sound like a broken record lately, but how about something like this?

Should be less messy than the My K-cup.

If you do stick with pods, by all means please spare your taste buds and avoid the non-individually-wrapped ones. Yuck. I'm not aware of any roasters that sell larger pods in bulk packaging.

What are the pod wrappers made of anyway? Anyone know? I've never gotten a straight answer. It *would* be nice if they were recyclable.

Having them individually wrapped is what makes them more fresh than pre-ground coffee.

I'm not terribly picky about coffee (work in a hospital and can drink bad coffee) but even I found out that the pods that aren't individually wrapped got lousy fast. So bad that I actually threw some not-too-old Senseo's away. Blah. I mean I guess it's possible you could put the loose pods in a baggie, but that would probably defeat the purpose of not getting the individually wrapped ones. At least the pods are biodegradable.

I gotta agree that something like the Sweet Maria's gadget or even a Melita cone might do more of what you want, and then you can just compost the filter and grounds.

Thanks for the responses everyone.
I used the filter cone method for years but now that I'm used to the one button convenience of the Keurig it would be hard to go back. I wonder if I could set the filter cone under the water spout of the keurig and use it for the hot water? Do any package in paper envelopes, or maybe this wouldn't seal in the freshness, being porous.

The filters appear to be paper similar to teabags. If anyone knows otherwise let me know. I was putting the little filter out of the kcups in the compost but noticed that they didn't break down fully, maybe some fabric content in there.

I bought a couple bags of the Senseo. We will see how quick they get nasty. I'm not as picky as I used to be. I see that vacuum thingie on QVC all the time, maybe resealing the package would work. Take a couple out at a time.

There is a product out there called Tea Sacs that some folks have had great luck using the number 2 size with the My K Cup. Do a search on this site or maybe some of the more established members can do a fill in. These might be the solution to your situation.

The Eldorado pods have wrappers that *look* like paper, but as you suggested I doubt they could be 100% biodegradable. Good luck with the Senseo pods. My last experience with them did not go well. The coffee was just bad fresh out of the package. Depends on the variety, of course.

That's what I've been doing, putting mine under the spout of the Senseo. (Saves me from getting half way to work and wondering "did I unplug the hotpot"!).

I also used the cone filters for years and about 2 yr ago started using a Senseo. (Yeah I'm low tech, LOL). I recently went back to using the funnel at home and laughed that I'd gone full circle. I still use a Senseo at work. I'll add to Josh's "broken record" - I use this Easy steeper. That fits fine under the spout and the built in "stopper" prevents leaking until I can get it onto a cup.
