Ethical Coffee Company Closing

Postby thefundu » Fri Jul 07, 2017 8:46 am

I recently heard about this company to closing the production and the major reason behind this is the patented use of only Nestle capsules in it's machines. Due to this, the company is not able to collect profits from it's 300 million pod production a year. What you have to say about it? Is Nespresso doing correct to stay in the competition?

The story is much more complicated and all we have at this moment is a blurb from a news aggregator that is both short on facts and lacking in background. ECC has been a player since 2009 when they filed the first patent suit against Nespresso and won. They suffer from terrible marketing and limited distribution channels; never really hit the big time. That's capitalism.

ECC is not closing, they are getting out of the biodegradable, Nespresso-compatible business. And they are citing the very reason they wanted into the business in the first place, competition. And a paranoid rant about the "giant hand of Nestlè". Capitalism is weird like that. Competition drives down prices and makes margins evaporate. Even if the competition sells drek.
