Nespresso PROFESSIONAL ES 50: yikes!

Postby bmwdctr » Sun Nov 13, 2005 11:38 pm

Hey gang, I recently acquired a new Nespresso PROFESSIONAL ES 50. I tried to do some research on the unit but found very little. Apparently it's for office and restaurant use. As such, it doesn't take the typical Nespresso "capsules". You can see a great little FLASH video of it here, by clicking on the lower left rectangle: Anyways, if someone is familiar with this machine, I'm curious if I can use regular pods, or do I have to use the Nespresso Professional thingys? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!

The ES-50 is really just designed for the Nespresso pods. However, if the pods measure 44mm across you could try an ESE espresso pod in it. If you're not familiar with those, they're like coffee pods but 44mm in size and packed with an espresso grind. For sure regular coffee pods won't work in an ES-50, or in any Nespresso machine for that matter.

As I understand things, a drawback of the Nespresso office models is that the capsules they take are only sold in packs of 50. The Nespresso home models take a different kind of Nespresso capsule and you can buy them in any quantity you like (well, as long as your total order is at least 50 capsules, but that can be any combination of their varieties). Note also that Nespresso offers fewer coffee varieties in their pro capsules versus the home capsules.

If you bought the machine for home use I'd suggest returning the ES-50 and getting one of the home models. Results should be comparable but coffee variety and ordering flexibility is better.

I just got off the phone with Nespresso. I found out that indeed the "Professional" models do take their own pods. And yes, I do have to buy a box of 50 at a time (2 boxes with my first order!). As inconvenient as this is, I really don't mind since I bought the machine for work and we drink a lot of coffee! The price of the pods is equal to $.49 each. When the coffee arrives, I'll post a review of it and the machine.

BTW, for home use I have a Saeco Vienna Superautomatica. WHAT A MACHINE! We've made over 2,000 cups of coffee without a hitch. Yes at $400 it's a phat price, but I was spending $5 a day at the local Peet's Coffee. I saved $400 in just 4 months! Cheers,

I happened to be reading the Press Release on the Tassimo site, and did you guys know that the Tassimo is actually manufactured by Saeco International Group S.P.A., who also manufacture the Nespresso machines, and many others? This is machine comes with a legacy of beverage making behind it!
French Press- Senseo- Krups Espresso- Cuisinart all retired for the Tassimo!
