Loud vibration/humming noise from my Keurig

Postby a good cup of joe » Wed Mar 25, 2009 2:04 am

Hello,
From day one my Keurig coffee maker has made a pretty loud humming noise when the pump is running to fill the machine. I have had two different Keurig’s now and they both make the same loud noise.

I understand they are going to make a noise but it just seems really loud.

Does anyone else have this problem and wish it were quieter?

I have the cheaper Keurig machine the B40 maybe that’s the problem does anyone have the other more expensive Keurig machines? And are they loud to?

Thank you,

Vibrating noise or hum

Postby paulc35 » Wed Mar 25, 2009 3:15 am

This is normal when the Keurig is drawing water from the resovoir. After everytime a cup is made. I have the B60 at home The B40 at work and My best friend has the Breville.

This subject is talked about quiet a bit. If you go to Green Mountain coffees web site and look at the reviews on the brewers you will see the same thing.

It is loud, but I've learned this is a very small aggrivation for the joy of the Keurig. You should here the Cuisinart SS-1 it makes the Keurig sound silent

I have the B30 and it is fairly quiet. Apparently because it does not have a reservoir. I love it. I keep it on the counter next to the frig and fill it each time with filtered water from the frig door. Also, it does not lock me in to fixed drops. If a coffee is a little too weak I can adjust the amount of water I load in. The max drop is about 8.20 and will not accept taller cups.

If you can get by without the reservoir it might be worth a try. It also has a much smaller footprint.

B30

Postby paulc35 » Wed Mar 25, 2009 11:17 am

Yes your right the B30 is not like the other brewers. You have to add 8 oz of water each time. The other brewers have a water chamber on the inside the stays heated and ready to go

Do they stay heated 24/7? How hot? Hot coffee temp or somewhat less?

As long as they are turned on and have water they stay heated.
B60 SE,B70,Breville. Temp 192, or can be reduced to 185
Takes about 40 sec to make a cup. 9.25oz

Thank you very much for the replies.

I was thinking about buying one of the better machines but if someone that has one of the more expensive machines could you also let me know if they too make as much noise as the rest. Except the B-30 I understand it is pretty quiet.

I really do like the idea of having a water reservoir so it’s hot and ready to brew.

Im went yesterday and bought some Fabric & some sound dampening material that is pretty thin and im going to put together a pad/coaster if you would that would go under the Keurig to see if I can't quiet it down.

If it works I will let you know how it goes, who knows maybe I will make them and sell them if it works...LOL

Thanks again,

I just timed my B30 for comparison. I started with "cold water" from
the frig.

Two minutes before coffee drop started.
55 sec til drop finished.
35 sec post drop before shut down.

Total 3 1/2 minutes. Might have been quicker if I started with tap water instead of coild water.

Question - how long does it take with the B40, 60 etc for the first cup in the morning if you don't keep the brewer on over night? I am concerned about my electric bill and wouldn't keep it on 24/7.

For the B40 with a full tank first thing in the morning, about 45-60 sec. in my experience.

You can also set a timer -- mine turns on at 5:45am so when I (eventually) crawl out of bed at 6am its ready to go. If I forget to shut it off, it will turn itself off after one hour. You could of course leave it on 24/7, but that's a waste.

If as jbviau says, you can get a cup of joe in 45-60 seconds from a cold start then why bother pre-heating? If you can't. then how long does it take from a cold start.

I just realized I was unclear before. It takes 45-60 sec. for my B40 to heat up in the morning. Add another 20 sec. or so for the brew. These are just estimates.

Thanks jbviau

That's pretty fast, considering my B30 takes almost 2 minutes before the coffee starts dropping. The B40 must have a totally different heating system.

Maybe it's what causes all that noise the B30 doesn't have.

Yup, it's fast enough for me! Heating doesn't produce any real noise at all. It's the pump that makes the noise.

My husband and I had a B60 which made the same loud vibrating noise whenever it was drawing water. It never really bothered us too much, however I was absolutely AMAZED when I went to visit a friend and saw his B70 in action. It was very quiet in comparison.

After much discussion, we decided to upgrade to a B70, and send the B60 to work with my husband. We just bought it last weekend at BB&B with a 20% off coupon. The total price came to just $136. It is SO much quieter than the B60 and we're very happy with our purchase.
